May be it's just me, I feel old AO much more like Home, this new design is just like every other forums...not like AntiOnline.
The old AO site was somewhat unique...this is a standard vBulletin site with AO features crammed in.
Personally, and no disrespect intended to mynstralgirl who had a huge job to do, it's way too crowded.
I can't wait to see what the old guard has to say about this!
/me
sees a flame war in the future!
i agree, the old way was the best..
even if you where able to bring back the main portal page, and just update the forum area that would be awesome..
but it's looking really lame at the moment, nothing matches, and it's just cramped..
And it's horribly flat...no shadows or add-ons to give it depth...it looks like it's on a piece of paper...no depth at all.
And you can tell the buttons from the old site look like they were cut out...you can still see the white around the edges and it's not even even.
Those are not the buttons from the old site. Those are the buttons from this version. I see the white edges also, but we didn't cut anything from anywhere.
Come on folks, give us just a little time to get things going here. It took two solid days of work just to get the forum software upgraded to this point. There were so many hacks added to the old software that it was impossible to upgrade. We've taken the steps that we had to take to make the upgrade possible. Now we can focus on working on the look and feel of the site.
The old homepage didn't use vbPortal or vbAdvanced or vbIndex, it was just a complete hack that was created for that specific version of vBulletin, and it won't work with the current version. So we're doing the best we can right now with what we have, and we're working very hard to bring the site up to current security standards at the same time--just please be patient while we work through this upgrade process.
Thanks,
Scott (intmon)
Im not so sure I like what happened in this last round of updates....
Definitely going to take some getting used to, everything about the page changed all at once, i was thinking maybe a warm up and easing into it, but I havent seen a single aspect that is the same yet. Whether that is a good thing to most or not, I think im confused ;)
Afraid that wasn't possible. It was all or nothing, and the forum couldn't go on using that archaic software anymore.
My error then...nevertheless, they still look like cut and paste.Quote:

The old site had character...whatever internal or board conflicts there was...there was a definite character to the place...
this place very much lacks character now...it's bland and flat. And those blue cut-out buttons look silly and out of place...they stand out like a blue duck in the desert.
Eg ;)
You can always ask Vb software to help you to upgrade your old hacks into this version.
That is on coding perspective but atleast you can change the desiging part. Like something similar to old,
thanks
Actually to my eyes, they're at least somewhat CLOSE to the blue in the AntiOnline script header. The purple ones we had matched nothing else on the site. They stuck out a mile because they were the only purple things on the page.
It is just because it is new is all, once everyone has found their feet and got used to it, you won't even think about it any more but just get on with it.....
I agree the old AO did have a certain unique feel to it, but it has been that way for so long that everyone just got used to it....nothing stays the same forever!
I like it, it feels more 'modern'! But it DOES take a LOT of getting used to to be able to navigate around with any ammount of speed!
enough w/ "good ol'" days BS
change is keeps you thinking
when i log in, i still see the log in user name and password fields on the home page, just thought its something to look into...i do agree with eveeryone else, it doesnt feel like AO but we'll see what you guys come up with it in the future....
did the trolls that were trying to steal my shiny pot of AP's move out or something....:(
Yes...but the bluish header is backgrounded by white and is off to the top left corner...whereas the blue virtual-depth buttons look way out of place on a flat desert color board of mostly sandy orange and grays.Quote:

You have a new version of the BB here. I'm sure in time things will get sorted out and setup nicely. Again, just the upgrade alone is a step in the right direction.
What I'm curious to see is how the site design will match the business goal of becomming a "real" security site. I see that the AP system is gone. That's a damn good start.

Now we all get to have massive reputations! Hoo Yaa!Quote:

I agree...but unfortunately it was replaced by the standard reputation system...which I find on other sites to be even worse than the AP system...they should do away with the kiddie reward and punishment system altogether...if you treat people like children they'll act like children.Quote:

Well APs are replaced by reputations. Basically the same type of thing.
I'd be happy to turn the reps off, if that's what the majority want.
You should ask...I think you'll find that most won't care...and the ones that do care will be the ones that are the most immature anyways so they shouldn't have them...and the site will be a lot better off in the long run...we have no system on our site and it works well without it...Quote:

Eg ;)
I think we did have a poll at some point, a few months back, concerning all the features most used. That's why the reps are on now. I prefer them off, myself.
The problem for me is that the front page just looks so cramped. I work with a laptop with a small screen and there's just far too much information, in really weird looking fonts (or at least it looks that way to me).
Also, I have to agree with the comment about the buttons. The quote and edit buttons look especially bad. I'm sure that's something that could be fixed in 5-10 mins in a decent graphics program (although I don't know whether whoever's doing the upgrades has any free time atm).
ac
so can reps stilll ban members, how many negative rep points doe it take or hits, in case of trolls and such, and can they close threads?
Hi JPnyc,
Adults won't care...only the children will be outraged and upset...honestly, I think you should just get rid of them...wipe it clean...anyone who needs green gifs to feel good about themselves needs to seek professional help.
Eg ;)
I guess it'll just take some time to get used to it.
I would def. like to be able to use the IMG tags or embed videos. (I'm sure Irongeek would like that too.)
We could call it AoSpace.
Leave em on! I like having a reputation.. :( It is the only place on the planet I will ever have one....Quote:

:D
Nah persoanally I would scrap the whole AP system.
A poll would be a good idea I suppose, also with all the updates going on at the moment now would be the best time to scrap the system altogether if that is the majority vote....
Or maybe refine it in someway, I presume they are meant to represent what the community thinks of a members security/IT knowledge, but we all know that is not the case - I mean look how many Eg has got :p , but I am easy with whatever is decided!
Yes, users can still neg someone into a ban. I think the settings are the same as before, we made every effort to keep as much the same as was possible
Exactly nokia , good reason to get rid of them :D :p
When I work on a car I always get it running first...I worry about the paint job later. So I guess I can be patient with the simple cosmetics here.

If you had run QA on this the you would have all of these problems figured out already... and the site wouldn't have been down for 2 days, nor would you have anyone really complaining about the look/feel of the place.
So far I'm not impressed with the new look at all. Cramped is a good word for it, and not at all intuitive in the layout.
**EDIT**
I'll give it time, and I'm sure at some point I'll become used to it but as of now I don't like it. I also don't understand why there are two different username/password fields on the main page. One on the top right, the other on the middle left above the thread listings. I only saw it when I wasn't logged in to the site. I'm sure you are working on it, but I thought I would give a heads up anyway.
Good Job on the site. Obviously was a ton of work. I'm sure there will be bugs to iron out over the next few weeks (as to be expected) but, I think I can get used to this new style forum.
In any event, it's the information that's important, not the way you present it.(IMO).
As for the AP/Reputation system, I could care less either way. It really doesn't even show that someone produces good information (just because they have 11 green dots--I mean, look at me) :)
Maybe a voting system where people can cast votes for good posts and if a post receives enough votes, it can then be reviewed by a moderator and assigned some kind of quality points?
I find it odd that so many people dislike the AP system but so often use it as a popularity contest. The very people that are saying get rid of it are going to be the ones behind the scenes complaining because they are no longer Gods. IMHO leave the thing alone. What's the worse it will do in place insure a few people don't decide to commit massive suicide? It would be good if people could use the system for what it was intended for but guess that is too much to ask.
I do have a question. If you hit 1k reputation points. Can you have the system turned off for yourself?
I think that would be a nice inbetween. At 1k RP's you will more than likely never be RP banned.
IMHO the old site was better. I fully agree with the others. Maybe I'll get use to this but it will take some time.
Cheers,
-D
looks AWFUL
and it is harder to nav around
I'll adapt, but it took me bloody ages to figue out the OLD setup
and now THIS :D
and just what IS a rep anyway
and why do some have a pop up style balloon thingy when you hover cursor over their AP gif, and some don't [all 11 green gifs on the ones I noticed]
MsM has one but nokia don't
I'm still looking where to set me avatar up again
agree about the QA set up
it should have been tested
this site is not run by unpaid personnel
just not professional looking ATM
hurry up with the finishing touches
and dump the rep / AP malarky
who needs it
I was #8 in the old system, and that HAS to make you wonder ...........
 And just where have my legions of leaping lepricorns who were trying to steal my big pot of AP's got too.........they were the only reason for getting them! :(
Ouch... makes my eyes hurt. This will take some getting used to...
Yeah give them some time. I bet they can make this really nice. :)
Also, if everyone prefers, the poster info doesn't have to be on top as it is now. It can be moved back to the left as in the old version
