LOL, that riddle really got me.
BUT look, elt's say we don't assume that they paid 9$, each of them got their dollar back and the dude got 2$ so if we add that up it will still be 30$. Because they paid 10$ and then they got one dollar back so that makes them pay 9$. But we can't look at it that way because each of them gave 10$ first and not 9$. So when they got their dollar back they still paid 10$ but they got 1 dollar back so it still adds up to 30$.

There is no missing dollar. Take a look, The cost of the Room was $25. They gave $30, but the room was $25. There were $5 dollars to hand out, which the bell boy gave $2 of. 3 men * 9 dollars = $27, and since the room was $25, the bellboy kept a $2 tip. There was a misleading math thing at the end where it made you think it had to add up to $30 in the wrong way
$30 = ($25 room) + $3 cash back + $2 tip.
It made you think $30 = $9 * 3 guys + $2 tip. ($30 != $30 - $3 back + $2 tip)

the math question is just misleading lets look at it another way then
each person pays $10 = $30
room = $25 so there is $5 that needs to be returned
each person recieves $1 back so thats $3
and the bell boy keeps $2
so the $3 the people recieve back plus the bellboys $2 = $5 plus the cost of the room $25 = $30
its juts the way it was said that makes it seem like there is a dollar missing when there isn't
its like the how many fingers & thumbs thing
try it - count backwards from 10 on one hand eg:: 10, 9, 8, 7, 6 then add the total number of fingers and thumbs from your other hand to the 6 you reached when counting backwards - that equals 11 but you surely only have 10 fingers and thumbs???
