Hi shifty,
Is that an all black screen with a white cursor in the top left corner or something different.
This is just a suggestion so make up your own mind :)
As Windows 7 seems to have similar requirements to Vista I would download this from MS and run it in your XP Pro environment:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
It will scan your system for compatibility with Vista, so might point out any problems like drivers or hardware that aren't supported.
From what I have heard the Win 7 setup is similar to Vista, and I suspect that Vista drivers will work if the XP ones will not.
@csr
Great link there!..................I actually have a fully functional BBC-B and an Acorn Archimedes :D
I never played games on a 3084, but I do recall Star Trek on a System 38 which would be around the same era?
My Windows 7 experience
Just to let you know, it did not end well, and sooner than expected.
The post was basically me chatting on some other IRC channels about it, but I decided to go back through the logs about what I said about it, then kind of roll them into a post.
Yes it looks like hell, grammar is crappy, but I still posted it anyway.
Fixed link, thanks...
Maybe next time I should actually copy and paste the link instead of typing it... ;)
So for those of you who have taken the time to try Windows 7, do you think it is worth downloading a beta of it? Do you use it a lot? Is it a chore to use and/or navigate? I'm willing to give microsoft a chance to fix the problems of vista, but does this new windows seem to have the potential to be more than only that? (If you didn't notice, I would like to bring the topic back to windows 7.:D) I thank those who have given their opinion, and appreciate info on the development of your opinions based on continued testing.
Beta is closed as far I know.
Beta will run till August, but MS are not supplying it anymore.
It looks to be an improvement on Vista, but the beta doesn't have the drivers for legacy stuff that Vista does.
For example, it doesn't support this keyboard properly...............I put the wires on that damn goldfish and none of the function keys will launch the bloody torpedoes :xbones:
It will only load over Vista or XP.............I haven't tried it on a new machine..... but it didn't like Win 2000. I had to wipe the drive, load Vista then Win 7.
Interesting. I loaded 7 on a 2000 box and it did fine. Were you trying to load the 64bit version on a 32 bit system? I know it's a stupid question, but I'm damn impressed with the 32 bit beta.
The 64bit as you say doesn't seem to support some of the legacy hardware. I have a 8X cd "Backpack" reader 24 pin connector that just will not work. But it does work on the 32 bit.
also 1 gig ram on 32bit is fine. not even an option on 64. but that's basic math.
Also, I've heard rumors on the net that M$ will offer an Upgrade at a "less than retail" price that will allow registered beta testers to keep their install of 7 after the beta expires.
Just a rumor
Nope, it's the 32bit version and it said the OS was incompatible,. However it was an old box and I think that Win2000 was at SP2.Quote:

I agree, apart from the goldfish of course :lildevil: Certainly seems to be a move in the right direction.Quote:

Yes, that's all mine has. I deliberately chose an older machine to check out potential transition issues with stuff running XP at the moment. From that viewpoint it certainly looks a better prospect than Vista.Quote:
