Well you would .... for a start you would just activate your GPS :) or watch the sun circle round dead on the horizon 360 degrees on June 21st without rising and dipping at all. Or your sextant and theodolite would pinpoint your position.
Certainly the South Pole you'd know when you got there - for a start you wouldn't be allowed to arrive, the American research teams there have a funny attitude towards private expeditions and don't give them houseroom. Then you'd see the official "pole" which marks 90 degrees south etc.
Too lazy to quote the post I'm thinking of, but yes religion requires pure faith. Hence why I'm not religious. Here's a thought for you all to chew over. Does it even matter if the world was created or not?
Consider some situations:
1) God does exist, He did create the Earth, He does sit and judge us all.
In that case all we can do is live the best lives we can, wait for the end and see what happens.
2) God does not exist, the Earth and all life is random chance and nothing happens after we die.

We say the universe can't expand faster than light. Why not? Assuming we do picture the universe as a four dimensional bubble and we sit on its three dimensional surface, much as the Earth is a 3d object and we sit on its (relatively) 2d surface, there are a few possibilities.
1) Things CAN travel faster than light. For a while people thought going faster than sound was impossible, we could be wrong again.
2) Other things are travelling "left" at 2/3 c and we are travelling "right" at 2/3 c - combined total separation speed = 1 1/3 c.
3) The "surface" of our universe is expanding at 2/3 c and things are travelling on it at 2/3 as in 2) for a total speed of 2c.
4) The universe is more than four dimensional and by travelling at a leisurely 10 mph in many of these dimensions objects appear to be breaking the speed of light to our puny 3d brains.
5) Our measurements are completely wrong because we really have no idea how to measure these things.
6) Light speed is variable. Light has been slowed down to walking pace. Perhaps something like that is happening to the light from other galaxies or some kind of reflection or whatever that we haven't accounted for causing measurements to be incorrect.
and on and on and on and on and on......
I think there's quite a lot in that .... certainly if other objects were travelling in the opposite direction to us, we wouldn't need to be going at the speed of light to appear to be travelling faster. Your other ideas are quite possible too.
No, it may not matter whether or not God exists if we do the best we can with our lives. But it's interesting to ponder.
The problem becomes even more difficult if the other galaxies are not moving away from us in a straight line. If they are following the curve of space time the apparent seperation speed will be much higher. If I remember right it used be a problem with the old speed radars and the small navigation aids for yatchs. If the reading from the radar was taken on a bend the apparent speed of the car was multiplied as the car was changing two vectors instead of one.
this works for those of us that are basicly good moral people, i guess folks like Moira need soem parental figure enforceign the rules and dire consicuences to missbehavior to actualy treat other people with respect and kindness.Quote:

I'm not sure why you think I would be some kind of moral degenerate without a figurehead of God. In fact, I'm less inclined than most people to see God as a "parental figure" or indeed as any kind of human figurehead. To me, God is a force, an idea ..... IMHO the reason a lot of people are uncomfortable with the idea of God is they're stuck in the mindset of an old man on a throne - I'm not.
