Being a female, I've noticed that they are few and far between in IT.
As some of the other women noted, female IT types are far and few between. There are even fewer in the security area. As an instructor, I'm seeing fewer and fewer women getting into networking and/or administrative work. A class I recently started teaching was all guys. And I know that a few had problems at first having a female instructor.
It's a shame. Being a network administrator is fun. It's too bad that more women aren't in this field. You can help people and as a security admin (or in my case, an instructor) help people. ;)
I think there is a fine line between geek and tech jerk..
I'm Tek-Goth.. as I've said b4.. but.. as I feel flirting online is pathetic.. unless.. you know them in person.. and.. even then.. they better like you before you bother them.. Too many techs.. flirt online.. say dumb things.. and try to catch the female IT's eye.. It's really pathetic.. it downgrades your whole online image to some horny teen with bad jokes.. What is flirting online really going to get you? Most likely.. you wont live anywhere near each other.. and they're not going to be into flying down to see some loser from AO.. pic or not... sorry to burst your bubble.. but look from the girls point of view.. Although.. I am male.. I'm trying to give you some advice.. Now.. as far as the goth-tek part goes.. I'm not an introvert to the point where I have no friends... I mostly hang out with girls.. Can't blame me.. and.. while I don't try to get in their pants.. as the saying goes.. Intimacy can develop just because I'm not looking for it.. and they sense that..
They sense EVERYTHING.. shhh.. hold on.. I think they're sensing this... SECURITY BREACHED!

I think there's just this sort of feeling like: "Hey, they're female, *AND* they might laugh at my jokes and understand why I have to change the TCP window size on this network!"
Though I think most people will tend to gravitate towards the worst possible person for them, and most people eventually get lucky and find someone who is compatible on a deeper level...
You know what sucks being a tech guy, at the end of the day (or anytime for that matter), no one wants to here about that program/bug you're working on or that that new firewall/ids box you've just set up is just so paranoid and you think it's cool...
Heck, I can't even talk (with my father who's in comps too) about it at the dinner table without getting "not that boring crap again" looks from my sisters and mother...
Anyways... just had to get that off my chest!
