Well, yes and no. Yes because the internet and how easy it is to use has contributed a lot of information that has been abused.

No because in this day and age now, american kids (at least those I see) are nothing more than a bunch of ignorant apathetic irresponsible never-disciplined everything-handed-to-them losers. Not all, mind you, but for ever 1 good kid I see today, I see 10 that same day that justify my reasoning never to have kids.

I will disagree on the "typical american" thinking comment. What does Norway think about things like this (assuming your info is correct on where you're from).

Question: if it's the computer that's the problem and not the kid behind the keyboard, left alone to it's devices, do you think it'll honestly launch that bot-driven DDoS just because? After all, this isn't HAL, hehe...so yes, it *is* the kids.

Ok. I take back the American thinking.

What I based the statement on are these few things I know about US politics: The gun policy. The much talked about rocket shield: It can't possibly be the right way to spend money, just think about Septembet 11. Again, what is the source of the problem? And last, the American policy on crime: How crime-fighting has become a huge industry, and rehabilitation of criminals is not the main goal.

That said, I have nothing against America, so I'm sorry if I offended anyone. That was not the point.

And as for Norway and these things: Latley, the prime minsiter has raised questions about the current morale of the common Norwegian. What he said was that perhaps lack of moral in the grown up community is passed on to the kids. So whenever you read about kids in the newspaper doing drugs, joining criminal gangs etc and you say: "man, what is this world coming to", you should at same ask yourself: What about myself? What have I done to prevent this? What values do I pass onto the little ones? So I guess that's somehow similar to whats written in the NYT aritcle.

No offense taken on the comment earlier, :D , just know that it's not all of us that think that way. You'll find that a lot of americans don't think the way the government portrays us. A lot of the decisions, like the FBI's new playtoy keylogger, are made by Congress, and they barely know how to turn a computer on, yet they're making a decision that will more likely invade our privacy (what little we have left) instead of actually trying to fix the problem. Any "terrorist" with a brain wouldn't use a computer or at least wouldn't use a privately-owned one. That's what libraries are for. This is just one of a lot of things that're decided for us, to serve us in "best interest" yet we're not asked. As for voting, that's a joke. I live in Florida, where the old population is outrageously high. We have Canadians coming down for six months, everyone visits, etc etc, and they have all the time in the world to vote on things that don't pertain to us (the rest of the working middle class). Voting in 2004 will definitely be different though. But I digress...as for the gun policy...once again, made by people who live in mansions on the good side of town barricaded behind walls and 7' privacy fences, etc etc. Their view of the world is definitely a lot more jaded than ours.

Target kids for a War on Hacking? i can see the evening news already. No sooner are the terrorists dead then we turn our attention to the WAR on Hacking/Piracy. Nice.

This goes back to the parents. Target adults for this type of crap not kids. Usually when you make something taboo for kids, it becomes a problem. i.e alcohol, driving,etc. etc.

Educate the parents. Get the parents involved in the kids life.

I disagree with that. I think that the idea that all kids are computer wizards of definitely overblown, but kids do have a knack of picking up things related to computers faster than adults. This is just my experience.

the average kid is just as dumb as the average kid has always been. and there will always be the above average.

i think the real issue is: do we want the internet to be integrated fully into society, or should it remain the last open range, where anyone can be whatever and do whatever he/she wants. If we want full integration, it needs to have laws and regulations. There's just no place for pirates in society.

i'd like to see it remain free for just awhile longer, it's just too much damme fun.
