I disagree..they CAN be done but not EASILY..thats why we HAVE the C++ libaries.

I found C was very useful for Unix system programing. Undergraduate degree in Comp Sci. The first programing course you take is either an intro to C, Pascal or C++. From that point on the proffesors expect you to use C for most projects (this might have changed I graduated 4 years ago).

C++ is object oriented like Java,which was stated. It was built around the C programming language. C++ is normally easier to use, but C is more powerful. As far as I know, any C++ compiler can compile C programs also. So you can use gcc to compile C++ or C.

Basic overview of programming languages.

The machine reads what is called machine language. It is all 0's and 1's.
The lowest level programming language is assembly. It is all the jmp, mov, etc etc. This is one step higher then machine language, and is quite difficult to use.
The next level would be C. This is easier to use then assembly, but not quite as powerful. It is known as a 3rd generation language. You can acually compile a C program into asm.
The highest level would be C++. This is also a 3rd generation language, but it was actually built ontop of C. It is the easiest to use, but doesn't contain some of the low level commands. It doesn't nativly access registers, which can be done in C. You can include C code within a C++ program though.

Basic, Java, Python, etc etc, are all 3rd generation programming languages also.
