Ok on the topic of hotmail I say get out now. M$ will let there free service degrade until you have no choice but to pay. Most people will just find another free email service that works but for some people who have given out the email address to lots of people switching to a different email account isn’t as easy as it sounds.
free e-mail will never die. Microsoft just sucks and there tricks and little games really blow goat balls.

I remember when I first came to this site (quite some time ago) we use to have a news section on the homepage. One of the first articles I read and replied to was about free web based email services starting to charge for their services. The reason behind it was that with the introduction of such software as Adsubtract these companies were losing money as no one was reading the advertisments...It really pisses me off....There is NO WAY i'm going to pay for email. There are still hundreds of free servers out there...
Also, I strongly recommend that everyone downloads AdSubtract. You can get it here. The standard edition is free and I strongly recommend it...
That's how they make money.

I think the problem is that advertisers have crossed the line. Most people attempt to circumvent ads for a variety of reasons, notably because many are annoying popups/pop-unders, and the fear of cookie abuse by large ad-resellers to track their movements. Personally, I let most of them run, so long as they aren't poorly designed, cluttering what I want to do, making annoying popups, or rife with cookie requests from the ad-hosting server.
