just tweaked with Customizer2000...nice interface, after you figure out that the usual 'tabs' are the icons on the left side of the window...seems to work fine...too bad it's only a 15 day trial...
My only complaint is that is seems to customize your RAM, HDD and buffer parameters based on how you have selected them in the "File System" menu in the "Control Panel"--->System-->Performance-->File System menu...(in W98se, anyway)
There used to be a program called "CacheMan" that would adjust them objectively...

Not that I endorse it or anything, but there are plenty of cracks out there which will remove the 15 day trial. Honestly, after I used Customizer XP for a couple weeks, I ended up just paying for it. It's not that expensive and I could justify the expenditure with what I got for my money.

I know, Avdven, but I can't do that...call me archaic, but I don't crack(steal) things, I'll probaby end up buying it(and backing up(saving) my registration key)...good product so far...

I don't crack/steal programs either, but many of my college friends always come to me asking how to crack things. I generally tell them the same thing people on here do... if you want to do something like that, go to google, or find it some other way. I've written a few programs and I don't want people using them without my permission, so I'm not going to help people do that to other people's programs.

well first of all Adam... welcome to AO.. the place where, (mostly) people bend over backwards to help someone if they state their question in an intelligable manner.
although i'm pretty much a newbie to security.. (hence,i read/use the search function)
I do know a bit about dialup/isp's/connection /thruput iissues.
first off, let me state that connection speed and thruput are not the same.
don't go believing that if you connect at some speed, that your download/ftp/ping
is a constant, nope.. it varies by the second. or less.
there are other variables too.. like the site you are connecting to.
so i would attack it from maximizing your connection speed first.(hopefully the thruput increases too)
from your information given..it isn't clear to me whether you have a connection issue..
hell you could be doing better than i.. but in regards to anyone else that may
benifit as well.. i'm going to try to post here the real basics. (as best i can considering my current beer consumption)
first , there may be a phone line noise issue..
do you hear noise on the line when you use a handset and just dial one digit to stop the dialtone?
old wires in house.. too many wires to other phones in house, even a bad phone, baby monitor or small ac/dc convertors can cause problems.. sources of noise are radiated noise...flouresent lighting, anything that has motors or that can radiate EMI other rf sources.. cb and other radio sources , wires in a jumble.. phone wires running parallel to AC..
if you can connect at reasonable speeds (mid2upper40's) at least occasionally, you're probably ok in the noise area... later, if someone wants me to offer help on a phone
noise issue.. post, then pm me or just pm me.
i won't here go into optimizing mtu settings.. there is plenty of places/programs that teach or suggest or change settings..
what i will do instead is suggest is get your latest modem driver, check your throughput
speed.. here is a good site/forum for modem info with links there for test.
http://modemsite.com/56k/index.asp (look for link for forum56)
a speed test place (but there are others)
http://www.testmyspeed.com/
for my final lecture :D tonite.. i will talk about dialing into your isp..
now, i'm from the us.. but this i believe, applies elsewhere as well.
various isp's share their connection numbers.. in fact the access numbers listed by an isp
are not the only ones that will work. they are assigned by the phone co. BLOCKS of numbers.
if you can find alternate numbers that work, you're more likely to get in, won't get
bumped , and may have better thruput.
i find a local number.. let's say xxx-3201 .. and using my regular phone handset,
try 3202,3,4,5 3210,1,2, etc.. (listening for modem sound) to try to establish the modem
number dialing range.. then use the upper numbers for access.
of course some isps have dialers..(which double as spyware) that won't allow you to
change the local number.. so you must create your own dialupnetworking connection
with the proper protocols/dns #'s and with whatever username/password . then not
use their dialer and you'll be rewarded with higher bandwidth/thruput/download.
i can help wiiith that too but not in this post.. unless there is an outcry for this info
i'm going to keep it for pm inquiry only.
that's all for now.. but if anyone needs help in this reagrd.. needs to bypass dialer
or needs help with isp's/ dialaccess or troubleshooting noise origins.. i'm here.. pm me.

Got that!
Now breath SumDumGuy :)

'm sorry.... hehe ... lost lost all my breath in another post.
with my 16 cell FIFO memory brain cells, thoughts become translucent without proper
oxygen intake.. :D

that's ok.... just remember to breath... I'd hate to do CPR on you :P
