yeah agreed jethro but if people keep constantly refering to AO as a hacker site then it is going to attract the script kiddies looking for an easy answer to all their lamer ques.
Some sk's may come here to check out the tut section etc - but alot of them come to post their "how do i hack hotmail" type ques....

I know this thread is quite old, and someone dredged it up from the depths of the AO basement, but I wanted to address the profile part.
A while back JP wrote a set of informative articles about how to profile hackers. My understanding is that a lot of LE agencies out there, including the FBI (which started profiling years ago) picked up what JP said and have even had him lecture/tech them his techniques.
I don't know that they "maintain" a profiling database, but if they do it's not accessible to the general public. I also don't know that the profiling is being done on members of the site, this type of profiling is done by looking at attacks, messages, etc and building a profile of what the attackers looks like and acts like. It will also allow you to figure out motive, and from that to possibly even guess what future targets may be.

OK.. As most of you have only been visiting this site since it went to being a more commercials site here is a little background:
This site originally started as a hacker site. At the time calling yourself a "security" site was not as popular as now. So the site was frequented by many people who are big in the underground... This was when it was run more as a hobby site then a business..
Antionline used to run a hacked website archive similiar to aldas or attrition. I guess at some point JP figured he could make some money, but to do that he would need to make sure that AO had a squeaky clean persona.. So the focus of the site went from, "here is information on how to hack", to "here is information on how people hack, and how to protect yourself..." There is an AO manifesto floating around here somewhere that explains JP's motives in the switch...
At this time the articles on how to profile a hacker were written. Apparently JP took all of the information he had gathered over the years and created a hacker database. This database was at the time only accessible to law enforcement agencies. It is possible JP still maintains it.. if he does.. it is not advertised as it used to be..
Now does that mean that if you are posting in these forums that the FBI is watching you?? No.. they don't have that kind of manpower... Does it mean that JP could log everything that goes on on his IRC server and tip the feds off if you talk about doing something illegal... Sure it does... But if you are doing something illegal, and talking about it... You are just asking to get caugt..
Ya know, I read that book.... all I got out of it was How to scam people out of there hard earned money. I learned about packet sniffing too, but other than that, the book in question didnt really provide me with any thought provoking arguments. I thought it was going to be really good, from all the thing I had heard about it.
