While I wonder just how much the lion could've gotten a hold of if the bars are 1.5" apart to have her arm severed (we're talking cut off here people), I do feel some sort of pity because now, at 21, she's handicapped for life with no chance of every having any kind of normal life. On the flip side, what in God's name would possess ANYONE to grab onto a bar that separates you and a 365 pound animal that's at the top of the food chain (to speak of). Not wise at all and you take what you get.
EDIT: another thing I thought of (or two)...1: if she hadn't had her family and bf there, she probably would've been paying more attention and 2: the bars actually saved her because if a lion can rip off an arm through a 1.5" bar, then it was her elbow that actually saved her from losing the rest of her arm or worse.

I hope that the experience doesn't keep her away from animals all together, that would be a shame.

I knew lions had voracious appetites, but had no idea they liked finger food... ;-)

That really, really sucks. A split second and her arm is gone forever? Ouch. Doesn't sound like she's an idiot, she's just unlucky. :(
