Well, as some have already said. ME is a very unstable platform. Actualy there is very little actual support other than some band aids for it so to speak. So here goes.
Solutions:
1. Add more memory. 128Mb is recomended. However, ME has a problem with allocating memory for applications and has a bad problem with memory leaks. Also when you close apps it does'nt free up all the memory. Also adding more than around 128Mb is useless because it won't allocate much more than this. If you want to realy use your memory upgrade to 2000 Pro or XP Pro (not XP Home).
2. If you want a little more stability and want the same familiar interface go back to Win98 SE.
3. Norton AV is OK. But ditch the Windoctor and the Norton Utilities. They may work well with 98, 98 SE and 95 OSR2. However they screw up ME through no fault of Norton. ME just does'nt play well with third party applications.
4. As far as price. You can get 98SE via mail order for about $75-$100 US. Win 2000 Pro (it's not to good with some games) for $100-$175 US. Then XP Pro for $150-$275. You can get this as an OEM price from some places if purchased with a hard drive which will save you big $.

Ryan - if you're actually trying to do the stuff people here advise you, why don't you try running MS Update and making sure you have all the critical patches applied to your system, first. After that, see if it still happens... if so, note when and what you were running or doing at the time - there's a decent chance it could be an application, or someone just whacking ya from the Internet (remember old things like "ping of death" - though that was fixed a long time ago).
Posting as many details as possible will get you better help...

ME wasn't meant for stability. This is a common Windows error. Click Ctrl+Alt+Del and see if you have any programs running you don't want. If the programs are things like "rundll32" and "systray" dont mess with them.

I have a question, what is different in 98se? Also, you might want to try downloadng the os's if you have a fast i-net connection, hehe, very cheap that way. You should know that when apps close, it is true that applications don't always release the system resources they used when they exit, the only way to get those resources back is to reboot, so try upgrading/downloading a new OS. Try XP, it is OK, it is faster, and get PRO, it is better than home, especially for new computers with all the extra ram and cpu power available.
