I don't agree with it and this is why even the average home user needs to firewall themselves. If they leave themselves open in any way and their ip pops up as happy hunting grounds during some kiddies port scan of a range of ip's, guess who's going to be targeted?
Forgive my semi-rant here... not at TechieChick by any means, but more directed to the subject-at-hand (which tends to upset me quite a bit sometimes).
I think it's all about the whole "I 0wnz ya" crap - no learning really involved, since they're using someone else's code to do who-knows-what simply so they can look at someone else's pr0n or whatever. A "feeling of power" I guess someone said... though, in reality, these losers are often (*warning* broad generality approaching) egotistical, lonely teenage boys that have nothing better to do than "be 'lite" and show everyone just how wonderful they are...
Hence one of the reasons I dedicate a lot of my own time to creating systems that, at script-k1dd13 hands, look like they're wide open and vulnerable to many of these scriptz... in reality, they're honeypots that sit around and waste time for these morons. So far one of my favorites is the BO emulator... it's amazing how long it sometimes takes these morons to figure out that they're talking to a honeypot (running on a Solaris box or similiar) that isn't infected actually with BO but just gives them canned (or nonsense) responses.

...and I think that if half of these kidz were worth anything and half as good as they think they are, they'd actually try contributing to the security community rather than simply trying to destroy or "0wn" everything.

draziw...I knew you weren't directing that at me. Problem is I could write three pages on this subject alone, I tend to get a bit wound up about this particular subject and you said it perfectly. Good job, thank you...

Just a side note. IMHO as far as safe surfing for kids. You can install tons of software for the safety of your kids. Though being curious as kids are and the computer litterate kids in school and what they learn. Most kids can circumvent parental software. It's not that hard. Of course you can install key loggers and spy tools. This just goes to break the trust barrier if they ever find out. It's in their rebelleous mode. I recommend to all my clients as far as at home commputers go. Make it a family affair when they need to go to the web. No software or practice can beat go old fashioned parental supervision. I never let my daughter on the web alone because all the pervs and creaps and her natural curiousity. Any of those can get your kids in trouble period. Besides browsing the web together can be and enriching and bonding experiance that you and they both can enjoy.
A little PS. Keep them off of AIM. If you keep up with the news a lot of pedo's and cyberstalkers use stolen AOL accounts etc.. to make contact with children. Or they pretend to be a peer of the same age sex etc.. to lure them in. Like I said, you can't beat good ole' parental involvement and supervision.
