Man does this post bring back some memories...
In my Junior/Senior year of HS the school had 3 seperate LAN's in it. In my school there were 3 kids that were REAL hackers and didn't put our name to shame (me being 1) The teachers knew we helped and we all more than one got pulled out of study hall to go fix crap. I had the root passwords for all the LAN's in the school memorized (the admins gave them to me). when I came back for my Senior year from the summer. I found we had a new Mac Admin. I also found out they had a little disaster in the Lab that caused them to have to use the backup tape and restore everything, including the old password file. Now the new Admin is SCREWED because the old guy is long gone and he has the root pass, oh great. So I walk in and she tells me what happend, So I say "pull up my username" which had elevated privs given to me by the last guy. I then go in there and enter my password and she's got root back. We've been friends ever since :D.
Yeah, people are just so afraid of what the don't understand (sounds cliché but its true)... And we all know how teachers over 25 years of age don't have a clue about computers... Heh, I've read this story where a security guard asked a comp student if a certain staff member was doing something illegal because he had seen him a few times with a message box stating "Illegal instruction" on the screen while passing by!!!
Of course in the case of teachers vs students, it's even worst cuz they feel threatened cuz the student knows more than them....

A lot of school admins are just dumbass who hate the fact that some of the students know more than them. It hurts there ego and they get upset.Quote:
somebody in my school had his username removed just for pointing out to the administrator that the internet filter was not working.
a few years ago I was working at the helpdesk of a company on second shift my work for the night was done and I had some time to play. I knew the email admin in the data center was accessing his home mp3 server because I was sniffing with I believe it was netboy and packet boy so I thought I would play with him a little. I created an issue on a computer in another office and asked him to help me fix it cause hes so uber with outlook 98 and all then when he was working at it I went into the data center and lo and be hold he didnt log out or lock his work station!!! I loaded a simple kelogger (cant quite remember the name)that also leaves an open port you can connect to using telnet but on a different port and see whats saved to a file( mind you this way is easy to trace and easy to find on your pc but it works) and disconected his connections to the internet ......when he finished his outlook fix on the pc he came back logged on to his mp3 server at his house and I had him. I planted a wave file that was a recording of me but mixed a little I just made saying he was hacked and should really consided tightening up his security. Funny thing about this is I used a training machine ( 1 of 80 pc's) and even if he looked at the access logs it would not have been easy to trace the actual culprit. then the next day I was talking to him and it was hard not to smile when he mentioned that someone hacked him through this network from the training room and wanted some help finding the pc with a specific mac.!!! nothing in the training room was labled properly I told him he had better things to do than this and that I would take care of it.
removed the nic from that pc and changed the pc name. That pc was never found..
so I did tell him some time later and explained how I did it and he said "that f***** up) a few times. then we talked about security some. This did eventually help me get to where I am today but It doesnt always pan out that way so use caution in your attemps to learn!
We should change the name of this from "VNC in schools" to somethin like "Ways an Administrator can be a total nit wit" :p
How do you get those little pictures next to your name there?
Nevermind that last post, I gotta get 10 posts!
It's pretty sad...my IT/Business teacher only got the job because he is a music teacher and he could touch type...every little problem and he has to call the system admin. everyone in the class is probably smarter than him but he's the teacher and we have to listen to him. The system admin doesn't care about anything in our school... i ran a telnet server so that our class could chat and the teacher found out a couple people were using it and he said "i'll found out who's been doing this and your gonna get in trouble" like seriously we havent been caught yet...really how hard is it to notice that there at 10 connections to one computer?
Why are all the in s red?
