students at berkely, the lovely home of bsd and lsd, experimented with vr for years and was actually making good progress. vr machines were created that were to create psychedlic atmospheres, sensations of flying, etc. some machines were being released to the public as meditative devices to induce relaxation, etc. this is when the fda stepped in saying that to sell a machine that acts like a drug, they would need fda approval. fda approval takes years for anything to get apporved and many things are still awaiting approval. beyond being time consuming, this process requires a lot of cash flow! a lot more money than any berkely student has, thats for sure. also, the government has been working to keep vr technology governemnt exclusive and out of the hands of the mainstream. this technology ahs been supressed so heavily because in their eyes, it is the "new drug." a safer, more intense, vision inducing, fun, virtual drug. they fear what will happen when the mainstream can get a hold of this technology. we have seen what happens when consciousness expansion happens on a massive scale with lsd and the 60's.
Maybe they could "open source" it... If they share what they know w/ some guys around they could do it... more people working w/ less expenses and new ideias... It would be cool... and also the FDA and the gov can not stop a networked organisation around the world... So it can be real... How about that?
I like to be "inmerse" in a computer. In a rude way, we do have VR: CS, Quake, Doom... I've seen a lot of people looking down and up their screen to search for a foe, instead of using the mouse... these peopla ARE IN the computer, not his body, but his mind... Also when the Need for Speed track has a tunnel, they lower their head... What is needed is some devices that aviod people to leave the game... I mean, back to "real".
I read a cool book that have few lines about some inmersive experiences... Cyberculture, Pierre Levy. It has some dream-like VR used in europe... I miss a lot to be here =cP

Actually, my... dream, I suppose you could call it... ambition, perhaps... is to one day create a total immersive Virtual Reality world, ala Piers Anthony's Kill-O-Byte (a must read!)
But that's a little while off yet.
Still, if anyone is interested in getting involved in my project, feel free to contact me.
