on-line petitions usually turn out to be a joke, id like to suggest an email campaign. the body of the letter to be sent along with the mail to address could be mailed to every one whi might help. a jave script form would be best but i would hope most of the people we know have it dissabled.
the problems with this would be the same either way:
who would it be sent to
and how would it be worded

I am all for it. Tedob1 the email should be sent to all congressman and senators, the main problem here is will they listen. Due to the lobbying power of the large software co's many people in gov may be bought.

yeah this is true, but being bought means nothing if your not going to be re-elected. if enough people voice their opinion their forced to tell their 'sponsors' "sorry, no way i can pull this one off, its too high profile and the public is not going to buy it"
Thats why wording is extreamly important 'intent' has to be made the main issue here so they cant turn it into a tool against us.
If legislation were to be passed that just made software manufacturers, in general, liable for flaws in their coding, this could be used as a very powerful tool in the hands of big money companys who would like, nothing better, than to squash their competition, such as fsf and linux in general.
As an example:
Dec 2001, about glibc.

Immediately after discovering the vulnerability in our lab, Global InterSec’s staff contacted SuSE GmbH (the vendor who’s platform was used to research this vulnerability). We gave them the opportunity to correct the problem.

If this type of legislation had been in place m$ would've found a way to have them in court already.
Anyone who writes a piece of software and puts in on their own website for distribution, would be under the gun.i dont think its a good idea to put software in an arena, where people sue because their coffee is too hot.
I think it should be stressed that we consider this criminal, with legal actions and fines and not public and class action suits.
