this is probably a newbie question, but are all PCI modems winmodems?

They're not ALL winmodems, but it's a very high percentage. I've only ever seen one PCI modem that wasn't a winmodem.
alittlebitnumb,
..... no offence was intended ..... I have been running Mandrake since version 8.0 and the little penguin here has suffered more deaths than Kenny from South Park - usually through my own stupid mistakes (trial and error), but as I have found persistence and brute force will win the day - eventually.
Oh, I dream of cable !!! until then the trusty 56K will have to stay.
I have now learned to set things up and pretty well leave alone ..... apart from the mandatory upgrades .... and of course, when the tinkering urge becomes too strong to resist !!
Phat_Penguin, none was taken to begin with. Like I said, I did not know the dial-up settings were in the control panel until I looked. I remember when I had dial-up in Mandrake 6.0 I had to manually configure the modem in kppp then put the DNS search in resolve.conf. In fact, I origianlly had a WinModem, and had to replace it with an ISA because of the Linux thing. I also had a really rough time with setting up my sound card at the time too, which used sndcfg to probe any devices... it was a pain. I have to agree it has improved! Therefore, if there's a better way, say it! I am not an expert by any stretch....
As for the cable modem.... it's sweet.
thank you all for ur help,
i looked in hardware section as u suggested but my modem was not listed there so i took another advice and installed RH 7.2 , it wasted my half hour but i'm now happliy connected to internet. thanx
kppp should get installed in the kdenetwork.rpm package FYI
