XP can find 98 but cannot enter.... And 98 cant find XP at all........
well....do you have any files or folders shared ? otherwise there is nothing to access...sooooo you won't be able to get in.
you are pretty sure the settings are right ? that scares me. care to print them out ?
ALSO...turn off the XP firewall for the network connection...it usually gets turned on by default...and that will stop just about everything that is supposed to happen from happening
I had the same problem at one time, it was easier to format the XP Home Ed machine and put 98 on it. I wish I could be of more help, but that is how I solved the issue in less than an hour. lol everyone else has already suggested most everything to try. I'll look around some and post if I find anything else that might help. Good luck.
Have you tried pinging the XP comp from the 98 comp?
check if netbios or netbeui is installed. that could help with name resolution aswell. hence you seeing the other system.
you could always use ftp.......
bulletproof is free for 30 days or so
1st thing to do is get rid of XP. then you should be fine.
hogfly...xp is not that bad....but in this situation tis true....xp doest like coming out to play with other O/Ses :/....my suggestion is either to put 2k on the pc if ya can if not put both pc's running on the same o/s either 98 or XP
..then after you finaly get to a point where the machines can see each other, if xp is on an ntfs partition you wont be able to share any of its files unless you keep them on a seperate fat32 partition
