Tosses his two cents in.
Personally, I could see the benifit of hacking into someones just plain jane win 98 system. Especially if this person is just a telecommuter who might have company files that they are bringing in from work. Also it would be possible, I think, to hack them especially if they have vpn installed. Wonder if you could use a trogen to gain access to there system, watch them just log right into vpn and steal there password that way? Even though I have just a simple win98 system at home with standard dialup, I make sure zonealarm is working every singe time I get online and often check programs to see what exe files might be presented there also. Im still working on making it a tighter system security wise, but could definatly see the importance of hacking into someones system, especially if I know that person works for the same company that I do, and I might not particulary like them.
again, my two cents worth.

I also see the benefits of hacking into someone's home computer. Many people do not leave their work 'at work' when they leave the office. Many business owners may have information on their home computers. Do you think that the owner of a huge corporation does not have a computer in their home office? :D And do you think that they have had one of their security people come over to make sure it is secure? Chances are, they have not.
[my 2 cents]

Not to mention that more and more people are banking online and balancing the checkbook and credit cards via a money manager (MS Money or Quicken) on their home computer.

Good point, didnt think about that. Have a friend of mine that does everything online, banking, ordering software, furniture, hell, he has even order groceries. Have been yelling at him to get some type of firewall up and running, za nortons, anything. Has yet to do so, told him its going to come and bit him on the ass one day.

It's amazingly easy to drop a keylogger on an open system, they bank, shop etc online and everything is logged with the keylogger.
Shopping at secure sites means nada if every key stroke you make is being recorded.

Sure, it's possible. I would think the biggest reason you don't hear much about windows98 exploits, is because they're not really necessary. Why bother writing an exploit for the OS when you can crack something much simpler (a resident program), and get the same thing accomplished? And there are ALWAYS resident programs on a computer that are ripe for exploitation. After all, what good is a computer that's just happily sucking up CPU cycles doing nothing?

TC:
Read a cool article the other day about how some hacker ransacked the pentegon. Only problem was that the server was located out west that was fully monitoring the section of the pentegon that the hackers went into. So...when they went to capture the crackers, they just posted the evidence and showed every single keystroke that the crackers made into the network. The article was about large hard drive capasities when useing monitoring devices. Was very informative. Sorta makes you want to second guess cracking into a government institution. *L*

Dont be nervous
These kids know about as much as you so there is no worry. There is always so much trash talk in these rooms. When it comes down to it people who really know wouldn't be telling you who they were and where they were from and what they could do.

If you want to hack a 98 box just go to Start>run>then type the \\ip\c$ of the box and if your lucky the c drive should pop up....thats because 98 still have a FAT file system, And as we all know FAT is not sercure at all.
