nice post man. not the first i have heard of this though. back when i used to experiment with mind altering chemicals and plants, i did my homework as well. you will find many, many instances throughout history where the people were influenced by such chemicals or drugs, some times on purpose, and some times not, like salem. there are countless akaloids in the ergot fungus. some are used for medical purposes such as penicillium, and others for drugs such as lsd. these people were not "dosed on lsd" but they were definitely tripping from ergot poisoning.
there are entire cultures, religions, and tribes based on plants, fungi, and herbs that have mind altering properties. the "magic mushroom" has been deemed the "flesh of god" in several different cultures and religions throughout mexico, and even eastern religions. drugs are nothing new, but we are brought up to believe that they are. as if there is some mad scientist or diabolical fiend deep in an underground lair somewhere creating them all to kill the world. most drugs are natural, and have been a part of not only nature, but human culture for all of time. you think we would learn how to use them correctly and safely by now instead of misusuing them and trying to hide them behind laws and prefabricated hysteria and paranoia.
I read this someplace before. From my understanding, a lot of the scientists disproof was BS also, and it is still a somewhat belived theory. I did think part of that conversaiton you guys had in irc was funny though.....
<Jethro-afk> Oh, speed......................lsd is not speed, speed is an upper, lsd is a halucinogenic....
<App> Its good for sorting your head out, thats why tribal medicine men used to take it ages back.............................. um, NO.. lsd was not made by medicine men. They used natural halucinogenics, like mushrooms ans payote. LSD was invented by Albert Hoffman in the 1920's.
Negative -I don't know your source but I saw a program on that on either TLC (the learning channel) or Discover. I guess tripping is only fun when it is done responsible and planned.
It was a documentary on Belgian tele last week, probably the same you've seen...
/me comforts all the Aussies...
In case you didn't know, salvia is illegal down under...
