I've supported Dell machines in the past through one of their outsourcers.. They are generally good machines. I have just watched TV for the first time in something to the effect of 12 years, and I think the only fault of the Dell Corp is their ad campaigns featuring that "Steve" kid. What a nuisance.
Friend had a Dell and couldn't get the CD-RW to work, she called in a couple of times, couldn't get any help and within about six months she bought an HP. I have an HP and mine crashes maybe five times a year, I recommend HP instead of Dell, but if your looking for lower prices I would get a Dell.
To follow Jaguar's point, I, in fact had a few problems with Dells in the past. My experiences were, however, far different from his. Most recently, I purchased a Dell laptop and the hard drive started to give paging errors. I called tech support, went through some tests with them (which, of course, I had already done on my own, but I figured I should humor them), and they gave me a tracking number for a new hard drive they were shipping to me that day. The following day, I had the package. I removed the old hard drive and installed the new one without any problems. They even upgraded the size of the hard drive because I said that I did not want another Fujitsu (since that was the one that went bad) and so they said they'd send me an IBM, but they only hard larger drives. My other experiences were similar, one time, they even sent a tech to my home to replace the motherboard of a series of laptops because they had shipped a batch of laptops with faulty motherboards. In my opinion they're absolutely top-notch. As for HP... I'll spare you from the headaches I've endured with them (and Compaq, too, actually... interesting how the two manufacturers I despise most for home computers merged... at least now I only have one company I have to hate. :-)

one thing: Don't forget about Gateways... I think they pack a pretty big punch for the money...
As long as we're on the subject I would also like to recommend Alien Ware, I love those machines. Probably going to be my next box, here is a link for all those interested:
