i'd have to agree with xyloplax, sticking with a bsd flavor (preferably free or open) is going to provide you with the best performance. i wouldn't even install an xserver. i ran an old 486 in my lab with nothing but a modified freebsd kernel and ipfw and never it never even hiccuped during the ddos sims pointed directly at it.
