Just try telling the IRS that it is a violation
of your religion to pay income tax.
Try telling your State gov't that your religion
permits polygamy.
The fact is that my personal convictions
are trampled by government every day
of the week. Permitting someone to wear
a veil for a photo ID is an extreme
contradiction, in light of the fact that the
rest of us are rapidly losing our right to
privacy.
Did this really happen or is it a rumor?

You guys are forgetting that she used the system. Do not blame this women, she was allowed by the state to have this liscence with her face coved, but at least it had a face on the liscence. Consider this before eveyone protests to much. I currently have a state liscence that has NO picture on it. If you are currently a resident of one state but are stationed elsewhere you can still recieve a lisence from that state via mail. Hence no picture. The system has loop holes, its not perfect. At least that women was playing the game and got a liscence she could just as easily started driving around illegally.
I think the point is that people cannot be forced to stop believing in their religion, and that (supposedly, hah hah) the government does not operate under religious motives. But this was when their thought of religion went something like: "Hmmm... Protestant? Catholic? Puritan? Quaker? Baptist? Mormon?... we'll have to let them decide."
In other words, the government cannot restrict belief, but they CAN restrict actions. Suppose I converted to violent satanism and I thought it was my religion to do icky icky icky deadly things to people?
As for the case of the veil... Either come to an agreement about the Veil, or don't get a license. You *could* get the nice DMV people to turn their backs and press the 'take picture' button (or do it with only female staffers or somesuch), laminate the card, and then poof, the card picture remains covered in public... by a pocket.
As for police arresting someone who is driving too fast and asking to see the card... do you really want someone wearing a (possibly thick) veil in front of their face to be driving at 55 mph on a freeway?

Bah, its the way the system bows to anyones religion that will be the downfall of the USA. Pretty soon every law will be overturned because somewhere, someone says it violates their religiuos freedom. I personnally think that no one should be able to get a license without a picture taken of an identifying face. You want the "privlidge" to drive? Then you have to take a picture. Getting a drivers license is a prilidge, not a government required activity. Therefor I think thjey should be able to make her take that veil off for the picture. No one is "forcing" her to go and get a drivers license. She is making the descision for herself, and for that reason, I think she should have to get a normal picture like everyone else. An as Terr mentioned, Do we really want someone wearing a veil driving on our highways? Whats next, refusal to take off her veil at an airport for a search? Will her religious beliefs stop them from taking it off then? Hopefully not. If so what prevents anyone from wearing a veil and hiding usamma bin laden from coming into the country. A USA passport photo with a veil? Whats next? Seperation of church and state.. bah.. more like the bowing of the state to the church.... nuff said..

Understand then the layers of goverment in the US, We have Federal which is divided into 3 parts. Then we have each State each of their goverments are broken into the same three branches, within those states we then have townships, parishes, or counties and each of them have 3 levels of control. Then you move to the local level each town city inm this country, rather complicated but each branch on each level citizens have the right to pass and to make exception to laws, ordances, and locial party control. There are things required to be a US citizen and one of the first is to respect all laws reguardless of one's faith. Her right was to get or not to get her license to drive, if it is her choice to earn the right to drive then she fully learns the requirements. We have Amish a people that do not believe in modern things like cars, eletric power etc, yet when they drive their horse and biggy their is a bright orange trangle on the back of the buggy it is required by state law for their safety and that of drivers of cars. Yes she has the freedom to choose but the system need not serve one person but all people. Call it lame call it a rant. Me I feel the same about all your US bashing, unless you live in ths country or understand fully the levels of govement and how our process an freedom works. Freedom is of making choices in those choices all people the same process. In short this woman need to seperate her faith from what the laws requirements, seperation of church and state works both ways in this country.

According to the Iman from the Islamic Center of Raleigh, covering the face is not a requirement for Muslim women. He said that even if a Muslim woman covers her face as an act of piety, she is supposed to uncover her face for identification purposes.

Judging from this, it appears that this woman duped the DMV and should be prosecuted. If this statement is accurate, her constitutional rights would not have been violated if the removal of her veil were required.

You need to make up your mind whether you are anti or pro constitution. You just contradicted yourself again.
I'm not entirely sure how you think I contradicted myself 'again' with regards to the consitution. I have never taken the stance that civil liberties should come second to the security of others, which would be basically the only way you could say I have contradicted myself.
I am neither anti nor pro constitution, I am simply looking at the facts and the laws. I care not about the constitution as it doesn't affect me, however the people who are here posting that this judgement was passed, and say it is wrong, I am merely offering a different point of view based on what I DO know of the US constitution.
