need help stopping a pedophile!!!

Zeph. I thought all the IM converstions were all hosted on servers, not actually connecting to others machines. I thought to connect to their machine you have to try something like an IM file transfer or something. Pretty easy to trick someone into this. Just say you're sending a pic of yourself. Get a file, any file, just make sure it's no more than like 200k at the most otherwise they may get suspicious and break the transfer. Rename the file with a .jpg format and send it away. When it connects get to the DOS prompt like Zeph said and do a netstat -a. Then do a tracert or use neotrace or some other program to find generally where their ISP is located. However, I've found that trying to do this with someone connecting with AOL then logging on a different IM user name always ends up with a tracert in VA. I think AOL puts a lot of their US clients through proxies there, but I have no proof and it's really just a theory on my part. But I've tried it with people in Ohio and here in Colorado and it always takes me to VA.

This might seem a little obvious, however, someone should tell the two girls that they are proud of them for telling a responsible adult about what was going on.

I would suggest going to AOL first, since they control the account information, including real name, location, age, etc, since almost all AOL accounts are paid by credit card. Hence they can look in the logbooks for said username and determine if it is legit or bogus, etc. They can't release the info to you, of course, but if you could get a copy of a chat conversation involving this person and send that along, it may incite AOL to investigate. They are bound by law to report any activity of that kind to the FCC, FBI, and any other related enforcement agencies.
Going to the agencies first only creates a backup in the system, and has to go through AOL anyway...

You asked on how to get info on this person so here are a few ways.

1.) I would first suggest getting him to email them. You can get a log of information from the headers in an email. That will also tell you if he is really an aol user or using the aol instant messenger which is free to anyone. Look for his mail server in the headers and unless he really is covering his tracks that should give you an idea of his ISP.

2.) Second you can go to http://hometown.aol.com and search for screen names of aol users and see if they have a personal web page with aol.

3.) Search other instant messenger apps for the same screen name to see if he is using those as well which may contain profile info or something else he has missed. I would suggest http://profiles.yahoo.com , http://web.icq.com/ and http://www.deja.com/usenet for a few

4.) They also have EmailFerret which is beneficial when searching for an e-mail address when you have a person's real name.

5.) Search aol classifieds and personal ads for the screen name
Search classified ads at http://classifiedplus.aol.com
Search personal ads at http://love.aol.com/

Those are just a few ways to see what info you can dig up on an aol user. I would suggest using all of them but the most information can be gained from an email. Unless of course he uses a hotmail or yahoo account or some other free internet email. Just a few suggestions, hope they help.

If you really think this is a problem you should contact authorities, they can get info quicker and more accurately than you could so pass it along to them.

OK, heres the plan, I just found out about this problem yesterday. I talked to the girl's mother. She is going to watch when they are online and if he starts the questions again, she is going to make sure that the chats are saved. I am starting this evening, after work, and am going to follow the suggestions given in these posts. I will keep all of you up to date on this. Like i said, i just found out and have talked to these girls' mom. Yes, these girls have been given a "pat on the back" for talking to their mom about this. Thanks again for all the help. Ok, heres the scoop on this hunt. I have not been able to track this bastard down. I can tell when he gets online to chat, because I have added his aol name to my list. He has only been online three times for a couple of seconds each time. I tried everything but going to the authorities to find out who he is. I have a friend who has an aohell acct looking up the username to find info. I don't know how to "social engineer" an email to get him to reply. Can anyone help please? I really want to catch this guy.....He is good about hiding....no other accts under his screenname that i can find in any chats. I appreciate the help.

Also, just as a note, the guy who neg'd me saying - I think it's you and your trying to cover your tracks and want to learn how though a lame attempt at social engineering. ....I hate pedophiles and if you want to know about me, just ask...I aint got nothin to hide.....So, if you spout off like this.....you better have evidence to prove it. I hate pedophiles and would gladly erase their miserable lives. (I got hit with -50 antipoints cause of this one person)
