Roswell The article does not say that the mail is being opened, only monitered, as I stated, if they start to open my mail I will rethink my statements. Please re-read my post. As far as the money transferr, that would be monitered by the IRS for Tax reasons. I would like you to at least propose your solution to controlling Terrorism within the borders of this nation. I am not saying to hell with civil liberties, only stating that with freedom comes a price. I wish it was not so, but it is an unfortunate reality that we all face.

personally i dont think u would be raided because all your packages would probably pass through a X ray machine and various scanners so your dealings would not cause any concern. and have most probably been checked out. like u said before we are watched by camera s all the time in britain most towns and cities are covered by CCTV hot spots for trouble are covered by CCTV, we have a big problem with asylum seekers so any body could be in the country, so national ID cards might be brought in. we have customs and excise which would cover stuff like your parcels.
At the end of the day i personally would rather know someone has questioned strange behaviour, and it has been acted upon.
I grew up with the terriost threat from the IRA, bombs going of in cities, so brits are used to it, it might not be nice but its best to be safe than sorry. if it stops ure every day criminal to the terrorist and the cyber criminal!!
we dont want another september 11th ever , best to be safe than sorry

Disagreed, I know this isn't the Cosmos forum, but. . .freedom is free. . .trying to queelch domestic terrorism by using everyday civil servants is a cost to freedom.

Galdron -- I agree with you that terrorism is an is a scourge on this nation and that law enforcement should be given all the tools they need to fight it, but we're going beyond valid police work if we are using untrained citizens as police agents. Who knows what prejudices, hatreds, and un-educated opinions are going to be rolled up into these "tips". If law enforcement were to interrogate these "tips" the way they do now, they would need to hire on an entirely separate force just to sift through all the bogus ones. I haven't seen a budget for such a force, so I'm left with the notion that all these "tips" are going to be taken seriously until proven benign.
This whole thing smells like a throwback to McCarthyism. What if I said I liked the Ayatollah? According to the First Amendment, I can say that whenever I want, but would I then automatically be the target of a police task-force? Back in the 50's, if you even whispered the phrase "I like red" -- even referring to your new sneakers -- and your neighbor happened to catch that out of context, you could be in front of the House Un-American Activities Committee the next day. Will this threat of law enforcement intimidate protestors into submission? If we, as Americans, are unable to stage an honest protest for fear of retribution by the folks with the automatic rifles, can we still claim to live in a free society?
Even if things weren't as bad as I depict them, they could get that way quickly if we don't express some kind of disapproval in these types of methods. Ordinary citizens being used as police agents is not a good idea. I just hope that Big Brother isn't a reality in our future.

Well Robbie99 they have traffic and intersection camers here and the stop light cams are being called into question all over the place. Here such things are called into question. As for strange behavior humm I can be weird at times my neighbor has always had a problem with my wife's race, and err well my mixed children so now she can report me am I a bad guy nope nor my family here and abroad. Yeah the IRA is finally saying their actions were wrong why because of this global axis of evil thing a rather general statement another people wishing their freedom. As for me yep was overseas bomb went off at a mall was leaving the parking lot lots of people got hurt proved nothing gained nothing. Question everyone in a nation to find one person? Cannot be done even inside the US an American killed leveled a building just cause he thought our gov wrong and made his personal statement. He died could the neighbor, mailman, meter reader reported or stoped him...NO you cannot cast a blanket and say all people may do this you have to have smart people make a risk assesment and well I only know a risk at a firewall not in my neighbor, and her personal problems with race.

Write your congressmen or women. Your one e-mail or letter (if letter I suggest handwritten) won't make any differance, but thousands will. Have your parents and friends do the same if they agree with you.

I agree that the Letter Carriers are not trained in the tactics of Counterterorrism, but I think the point being made here, is that the Government is looking to the laymen for help in fighting this scourge. They want everyday citizens to become aware, and in tune with the current plight faced by our country. I truly hope this is not a Macarthy era "Witch Hunt", as this would be counterproductive. As for peoples civil rights being trampled, as a result, this is is a problem we face every day, and I abhor it. Look no further than the LAPD, and you will see that hatred remains embedded in the very roots of our society. Before 9/11, I considered myself a strong advocate of civil liberties and privacy, yet in the aftermath of the destruction of the Twin towers, and the scars that have been left on the fabric of our society, I worry about our children and their future. It makes me very sad to see how hatred and jealousy, can tear apart our everyday lives. For the feeling of security not only for myself, but for my fellow Americans, Christians, Muslims, Jews, Ect.......... I am reluctantly willing to give up some of my rights. I just hope that our Government does it for the right reasons........I hope that Orwell had an overactive immagination. Peace to all!!!!

You know what you need? First, put your computer and anything else sensitive into a faraday cage. Unplug other things. Then use a home-made EM disruption device (running off of wallcurrent) to fry any cameras or recording devices that the meter-man says he doesn't have :P

Jeez.......Orwellian, isn't it?

The post office won't cooperate but that doesn't mean it's over. If someone gains access to your house (guest, utility worker, etc. ) and you upset them what if they reported you out of spite? You become the subject of further investigation, possibly disrupting your life, your work. Your neighbors begin to act different... these are becoming real possiblities.
