I agree with draziw .... I as a LEO in Oz and I feel that the pressure the media place on their respective law enforcement agencies needs to be reviewed - taking nothing away from the evil nature of this crime.
While the public have the right to be informed in timely and accurate manner, the intrusive nature of the media can turn things into a circus and tend to force the players into issuing statements they would otherwise not. It would also divert some of the LEO's attention away from what they should be concentrating on most, the crime.
I watched some of this on Fox News and was appalled that they released the name of the little girls friend (if they have not got the right guy, the real one knows who she is now!!), and they have this guy tried, convicted and executed before his day in court. Everyone has the right of the presumption of innocence until proved otherwise.
For the sake of the parents, family and community I hope and pray they have their man and make the case stick.

What he or whoever is guilty did to that poor girl, is unspeakably horribly evil and demented. Beyond sick and perverted. He doesn't deserve to die, he deserves to suffer every damn day of his life until his death provides him escape. I hope his mind is taunted and tortured with ghosts of his crime.
Castrate him like a bull, tie wire around his balls and let them die and fall off. Cut off his fingers so he can't touch anyone. Disgusting *****.
I am not convicting him but I don't think the police would offer such opinions if they didn't have some pretty convincing evidence on their side.
Whoever did it deserves what I said and worse. I could go on and on, but it depresses me to do so. Poor girl, didn't do a damn thing to deserve such a fate.
I sincerely hope they convict the rapist/killer and torture his ass off!

Terr: I don't think that was very cool of you. Just because people freak out at these "tragedies" does not mean it's wrong to do. You have to realize that sometimes things like this hit close to home, and this really does for me. It's really hurtful thinking of another kid having this crap done to them, because, well, I won't go into why but it really is hurtful. It might get old to people who don't feel the same, but IMO if you're not interested, don't open the thread.

The next thing you know, some stupid twit will be suggesting
that the crime is society's fault, that the ass hole was
abused as a child, and that he can be rehabilitated!"
A society that fails to react with righteous vengeance in
a situation like this has a death wish. The vultures are circling
around Washington, hoping to pick apart the bones of
our liberal, progressive, compassionate society.
What's needed in this case is a lynch mob.

Well, let's see... what else is going on in the world right now that could use a "distraction?" Anyone hear that the US has bombed Iraq again? (I know, details are sketchy - but this news has kind of replaced the international news at the top of the headlines. "Things that make you go hmmmmmmmm....")

I think the issue is twofold.
- Launching into an anger-fest over someone when they are still just a suspect.
- Describing horrible punishments that are sometimes, if you look at them seperately, even more disturbing than the crime.
It's not that anyone is doing anything wrong by being angry. The problem is that people jump to conclusions (whether or not they are correct), and then seem to say that it's okay to be inhumane and cruel, as long as the OTHER guy did it first in any context.
