Thats a good point Nth Man.
But I know that in my area the badges are worn to identify who works at the school and who comes in from the outside. To take the whole "badge issue" to the extreme; in my town a teacher was fired for not wearing his identification badge for a single class period. He said the only reason he had taken if off was because it needed to be re-laminated.

the joys of a private high-school...no ID badges..

Damn, in my highschool, no badge, no security, nothing. However we have locks on the lockers... :)

The private HS I went at had no security, but they're getting "supervisors" (not quite "security guards") for next year. Not a violence problem but more a vandalism/loitering/drugs (pot)/theft problems...
As for badges, they do help to control access to the school... Just like pretty much all office buildings require employes to wear one...
And besides, most schools already have student cards (for the library, computer labs...) so there's not that much cost in having students wear them...
