All good advice about external modems, but you don't have to go with external if you don't want to. US Robotics makes an internal hardware modem that works fine under Linux, although if you use a 2.2 series kernel you will have to tweak it with setserial. I've had a few of these modems over the last few years, all of which were purchased at Office Depot. I believe the last one I bought actually said on the box that Linux was a supported platform. It's worth a look if (like me) you don't like external modems.

If you are using a Winmodem, perhaps tyger_claw's tut will be of some help. Check it out here. Others seem to have had some success with this guide.. Maybe it'll save you a couple $'s.
Good luck and regards.

I am running rh 7.1 and got a driver for my winmodem and have no problems whatsoever. Everything runs perfectly. I am getting used to Linux, and when I have a good grasp of it, I plan to migrate all my comps to Linux. My friend who helped me setup my linux box, went to I think its linmodem.org or something like that....Ill try to get the link and pm it to you.
If you need drivers for a win modem, try going to http:///www.heby.de/ltmodem . I hope this helps you.
