ok so that's my point:
the WAN port on you router already was an "inverted" port so you didn't need a crossover cable between your router and cablemodem then.
but between the cablemodem and your network card, then network card being a "straight" interface, your gonna need an crossover cable...

Yep ammo could be right, perhaps your router or switch came equiped with a mdi/mdix button to allow use of both cross or straight cable?
In most cases you will need a cross cable to connect your cable modem to your WAN side NIC on your firewall pc.
I got a new nic card and everything works fine now . thanks for help
I had a problem like this. I was using multiple nic cards in my 2000 box and got all sorts of wierd problems. Like which one was the main card that connected to the net and which was only the lan. The problems some of them, turned out to be interupts. Verify there are not conflicts and verify which are sharing.
