Firewalls are indispensable for security, they keep all non-essential services from accessing or being accessed from the Internet. However firewalls are not foolproof and you are never really away of an exploit against them until it been in the wild for a while. A port is only open when a service is listening on it, if you want to ‘turn-off’ a port, disable the service. Like telnet, www, smtp services, unless you’re using them. Keep updated with the latest patches, and set you browser to prompt before it does anything that could be dangerous, like run scripts, ActiveX Controls, java applets and auto-install. Disable active scripting and learn all you can. Subscribe to security alerts and ask allot of questions.
