Have you installed an out of date version of Norton Utilities (or any other 3rd party app) that needs access to the file system to run its course? I only mention it because the NTFS error makes me wonder about it.

Ok you probably have a hardware error. So take out any acessories like sound cards and NICs and run with the basics. Video, ram, cpu, video. HD,CDROM. and Mobo.
Try it that way.
Couple of things I've seen cause errors similar to yours :
1. Ram - ram errors as previous noted by numerous people here have been seen to cause this.
2. A ripped copy of the OS CD - strangely, if the CD has dummy blocks or bad data written to it, it won't complete the install. Also, OEM Cd's designed and stripped for specific hardware configurations would cause this as well.
3. A dirty CD Rom Drive - if the laser doesn't read correctly, it can't copy files to the HD correctly.
I've had the issue most commonly with a dirty CD Rom, but had a few experiences where a ripped CD, or stripped down oem version, caused this type of thing. Just a few things to look at.
Hope this helps.
Good luck and Regards.
