Sounds to me like he just wants to know the encryption algorithm. I have no problem answering a question like this, as it should be relatively well known. Windows 2000 uses the Extended Data Encryption Standard (DESX) as it's encryption algorithm for it's EFS (Encrypted File System), and I think it uses a proprietary DES variant algorithm for it's SAM files. Don't quote me on the SAM passwords, though. The Salt string is an integer that the authentication system uses to "seed" the algorithm. If you encrypt the same password with 2 different salts, you'll get 2 different encrypted strings.
