"How can I really protect my computer against outside intrusion...."
Read. Read. Read.
Never be afraid to ask questions.
Don't limit yourself to a handful of websites.
From the people at AntiOnline to GRC to INFOSYSSEC to ZDNet to magazines, info is everywhere.
When you think you know everything is when you find out you don't.

I have just recently installed pc-cillin2002 which includes a personal firewall.It works fine for me at home,and I have just added Zone alarm.I was running a previous version of pc-cillin and when I installed the newer version it picked up a trojan on my machine.
I monitor all my logs when I am online at home and you will be surprised how many intrusions was blocked by pc-cillin.My previous version did not have a personal firewall, so it pays to stay up to date if you want to keep your machine healthy and your data protected from outside intrusion.In the 1 hour I spent online I had 7 intrusion attempts, from which two were of a personal nature.
I personally think you must get the best protection you can afford, because lost data is irreplaceable.

I have to agree with sonIc's first post. That's the only way you can be 100% sure that your PC is safe. :D

Best advice I gave to my Eldest son now 27 going on 28 is "do not poke without a coat" Do not want your system used to birth a bot, system control beyond you learn that when you turn it on you will under new laws being passed be responsible for what ever it may do on th Web, network, sys admin see's more then you think and respect the right of other systems as you want your network or computer respected. Free is a word that has a cost and price it may be spyware, backdoor programs and other exploiting commerical people using you free as the user, so read, understand EULAS (End User License Agreement) TOS (Terms Of Service), and be aware that nothing you do on-line is unknown. Other then the other advice good advice even here on networks freedom has a cost.

If you are on a single computer (not a LAN/WAN), I would suggest removing the TCP/IP binding to NetBIOS. It's fairly useless if you're not connected to some kind of intranet or close facsimile.I have recently removed mine after reading some articles about NetBIOS basically being a "backdoor" into your system if not properly configured for maximum security.
Here are some related websites
http://cable-dsl.home.att.net/netbios.htm - this one is ok.
http://www.mynetsec.com/html/windows.html - this one is more comprehensive
hope I helped ::bandit::
