Get involved with your local ACLU chapter, or just become a member. Visit CitizenWorks, learn about what' going on that could be affect you and those around you, and yet you never hear about these things. Visit their tool box, it has some very good tips.

Don't expect to make a change overnight, start small. Put up flyers in your neighbourhood, inform people, set up meetings. Write letters to the editor of your local newspaper regularly, put up a small webpage, write the address on all your currency. Get involved in your city politics. Visit Progressive Portal (all credit to Conf1rm3d_K1ll for having that in his signature).

I know it sounds like a tall order, but what price Freedom?

Your right mathgirl32, it is all about incrementalism. A seemingly innocuous law passed here and there, not giving up much, for safety’s sake on each occasion. Then along comes this evil man to put it all together. Someone is bound to come along, if there’s a way to exploit something it will be exploited.

The only reason the government is able to lead the masses is because they (the masses) want to go where the herd goes. They think that’s what everybody else wants. Silence is surrender.

If the 5% or so speak up instead of silently brooding, many more will stand up and say “Yeah! You can’t do that!”. Once it’s broken the bounds of compliant behavior, citizens will debate the issue and judge it for what it’s worth.

For those of us that don't live in the US, there are many countries in the world that emulate what the US does. What seems to be a good idea in the US may be put into practice in other countries. A follow the leader mentality. I would hope that Canada would not follow in these particular footsteps but you never know. It all boils down to control and lack of privacy.

Yes, incrementalism is the appropriate term here. Not only are they after taking away our freedoms, but are also after taking away the communicational tools we would need to fight back if(when?) things get worse. The NSA has had a hardon for PGP and other strong encryption for years now, and they are really pushing their agenda after 9/11. And now all these new surveilance measures involving ISPs are just another way to break our ability to carry on private communication. This is how it all begins. Anyone here read history? Freedom is not something you can take someone's word on that you possess. It must be exercised BEFORE too much of it is lost. This IS the metaphorical slippery slope. Resistance to this type of thing has to be organized before it's too late. And most people just say "I have nothing to hide." If they could only imagine how literally true that may become.

No, ShagDevil, they must not be laughing. They must be scared to feel themselves as newbies when they view that the "nations of the freedom" which destroyed them had become their spiritual children (and I don't speak only about the usa, the Europe wants to apply the same type of rules).

I come from a generation the first that won the right to vote at 18 after older brothers of many famlies went off to fight a war and never came home or if they did in a box. So no matter what country the right to vote is a powerful thing. Many things have changed in history upon one vote. Freedom just because the today preception of the word free cannot and will never mean there is not a COST, rights slip away freedoms, civil rights in the name of protection and security? What price are you willing to give up on the very boot up of your computer? Did you not pay for it buy the software? What hack it or Warez it and not working right? All of these things are used by goverments and private corps not to better the human condition but to secure their self served lofty place as the keepers of humankind. One mad man has turned the world upon it's ear in some cave informed of recent events lays claim to being the Mastermind...according to the US goverment. Simple question how can one cave dewelling man hold the worlld hostage but to make goverments believe he actaully controls it all. To this I say he has set his self up for a good life, as all the other world leaders for their eleite life that never has been nothing more or less the ego's and self serving. After all what ever country takes their country $$$ to get to office and I have seen their corruption forst hand. In short they got the root access

Then, it was in relation to some other proposed govt intrusion. What's about to come down now is even more intrusive and, I think, far reaching. Virtually everything you do online will be subject to their scrutiny. Emails to friends, probably chats with relatives or friends, all of it. And, what if you encrypt your mail. I should think you'd immediately be under suspicion.
