when you are here-> c:\
type the following: d: and then press enter (d represents your cdrom drive)
then you will be here->d:
type setup and press enter.
the installation will then start.
win98 setup disk must be in the cdrom!
if it doesn't work just try to be more specific

i think everyones getting on the right track. after you reformat the hard drive, you need to boot off of a startup disk. from the startup disk you need to partition the hard drive, and after that is complete it will tell you what drive is your cdrom. probably E: or something like that. from there, you can install windows from the cd.
you have to remember that before the os is installed, the computer just randomly assigns letters to drives. D: isn't always going to be the cdrom.
good luck!

Ok heres my pc Gateway Select 800 bought cheaply from a friend. 800mhz, 30gig hd, 256dsd ram and a dvdx16 drive.
Everything worked fine until I reformated. Thats when I get "c:\" I then deicded screw windows and decided for a Red Hat linux 8.0 install well, now that everything is partitioned it says
INIT:verison 2.84 booting and it stops at that I left it on all night and it didn't boot. I had to hold down the power button so i suspect that some things were loaded. I then deicded to reinstall Linux, with different options, then I tried a third time, and to my dismay I got the same message. I rented a few books from the pub lib, but nothing yet seen my problem. Until this is fixed I do not have a home pc, so I can only check my email at a local school or library, pls email.
