that is quite a large difference , does the browser account for any of it ? opera seems to work faster for me .

Well, I can only speculate, I don't have "hard" evidence of what is dragging box #2 down.
If I were to hypothisize though, this is what I'd say are the factors in the difference:
(In no particular order)
1) The browser overhead.
2) The OS itself. ie. how it's structured
3) The number of background processes running on box #2
4) Maybe the NIC's. I'm not sure though, maybe someone a little more into their hardware can help me out. Box #1 is built into the mother board, box #2 is a PCI card.
5) Box #2 has more active peripherals attached to it that might be stealing a few cycles.
no question you ask is ever dumb, thats what the forums are for, to ask questions and help other people and yourself learn, the only questions that would be considered dumb here would be:
"how do i hack somesite.com"
"how do i hack hotmail / yahoo etc"
the *nix thing had me stumped for quite a while actually when i first started here myself, so youre not the only one, you may want to take a look at the 'hacker jargon' link on the main AO page, it has quite a few hacker 'jargon' words with explanations which may or may not be of some help to you in the future here :)
think of windows as a paint roller and linux as a canvas brush.. now if you are trying to paint a barn, it would be done by anyone easily with a paint roller, but if you are trying to paint a portrait, you'd need a canvas brush and a highly skilled painter to get the best results. linux runs faster, more securely, more stable, more customizable, in the hands of an experienced linux user... in the hands of a person not farmiliar with it, it is confusing, unstable, etc. now anyone running windows can do basic things, but when it comes to choosing either one, linux is better at doing more advanced things if you know how to use it.
I would think the extra peripherals and the fact that the NIC is direct into the motherboard will be factors. The only way to prove which would be faster -- in a scientific manner -- is to have two boxes EXACTLY the same. There are so many things between these boxes that could have an affect on the results.Quote:

That said, I still say that if it does what you want it to do, that's all that matters.
although this thread took a different direction i would like to address the original question
*nix doesn't mean particular unix nor do we use it "because it's cool".
*nix is a derivative of original Unix (now copyrighted) therefore when something works or is written for *nix you can assume it works in Linux, Solaris, BSD etc.
yes of course there are exceptions
