It stated in the article that the data was sent across the Internet2 network. Alot of universities in the US and Europe are integrating Internet2 into their campuses. I'm pretty sure its a closed network, used only for academic related activities. You can see a bandwidith usage breakdown of one of the connections at the University of Florida, its marked Abilene_Internet2 here

Maxtor Atlas 15K has a maximum sustained data rate of up to 75MB/sec

Lol. So i wasn't dreaming. I thought i read something about internet 2 a while back but could never remember from where. Those are some pretty crazy speeds.

You add more RAM for buffering. 200 MHz DDR SDRAM transfers data at the speed of 1.6 GBps ([8 bytes] x [200 MHz] = 1,600 MBps) and 466 MHz DDR SDRAM at stunning 3.7 GBps. That is enough still for a while. :)

dude, OC256 = 256xT3, T3=140Mbit, 256x140=35840Mbit/sec = 35.8 Gbit per second... that must have been the old record that i just showed you.. but still thats fast!

Now who says we dutchies have little bandwith just because we're a small small country ;) ? The fun thing is they managed to exchange more data over 10,000 km then my desktop computer can internally, that's about 0.5 meter.

er0k, what's your source for that? I can't seem to be able to confirm those numbers you are giving. The numbers that this page shows are the most common that I keep running to.

It says that T3 is 44.736 Mbps and that OC-255 is 13.21 Gbps. Your misundestanding probably arose from the fact that OC-3 is 155.520 Mbps which is 3 x 51.840Mbps which is the speed of OC-1 (which is different from T3).

sorry there was no source, that was just from memory, but who knows..

T1 = 1.544MB/s (24 Channels x 64K/Channel)
T3 = heh well 43-45 (672 Channels x 64K/Channel)
A T3 pipe is 28 times larger than a T1 pipe

OC's are multiples of eachother the base being what ZeroOne said with OC1 = 51.84MB/s
