The one-pixel gifs are used solely to count the number of users.
We're a publishing company; we're not trying to profile anyone or learn anyting about clicking or browsing.
We need to count the number of users; it's just like when TV companies have ratings to count how many people are watching their shows. We need to know how many people use the site.
When ads appear, they may have cookies. Once again, it's because the advertisers are counting that their ads are delivered.

Yes, I know.
When cookies were new and we first started to use them years ago, we were asked all the time about them.
We have more 20 million uniques IP addresses a month that pass through our various servers, more than 4 million unique email accounts on file and we maintain about 800,000 message board accounts. No one here has the time or authority to try and analyze what any individual is doing.

my concern isn't that the information IS used, it's that it COULD be used.
