depending on the company, sometimes just viweing a page with a banner add makes money. There are 3 types of banner adds....
1> pay per purchase... these make the most money for a company cause they get a percentage of any purchace a person makes after clicking a banner
2> pay per click.... these make a certain ammount of money each time a user clicks a banner (last I checked it was like 5 cents every 1000 clicks or something.
3> pay per view.... these have the lowest returns, but are easy money for a site this big. They make something like 1 cent every 1000 times the banner is viewed, so every time a person loads the page, it adds up....
I am not trying to defend banner adds, I am just pointing out that even if you don't click them, some of them will still make money for the site.

Quite frankly, I don't see what all the fuss is about. Contrary to the rest of you, I really have no problem with banner ads. As long as Jupiter Media doesn't start using pop-ups and pop-unders, I'm fine. Banner ads are unobrtusive and I would actually click on the ad just to support the site. I would probably never buy anything simply because I don't buy stuff online. Otherwise, I probably would have bought stuff if it interested me. Pop-ups and pop-unders, of course would get closed before they could load.
Cheers,

I agree with cgkanchi here, unobtrusive banner ads aren't that bad... certainly better than having 5 pop-ups try to appear. but there is one thing everyone seems to be forgetting.... or at least choosing to ignore..
Jupiter media is a commercial company. Commercial companies make money - at a fundamental level that is why they exist. If jupiter don't make money off this site, why should they bother keeping it going?? Lets face it with no money being generated there is no incentive for Jupiter to keep this place going is there? Even open source software recognises this concept.... how many times have you seen the phrase (or similar) 'free' as in free to modify not as in pay no money. I know things were different under JP but JP isn't here anymore. Besides which if you think a banner ad would be a pain just think of all the countess other things that could be introduced. As has been previously said... just get out the old hosts file if you really don't want to see banner ads

I fully well understand Jupiter Media's desire and right to try to make money, after all that is what companies do; however, that is a seperate issue from what I asked. I asked only if 'Banner Free Surfing', as an earned benefit, was gone.
Now, being the paranoid nut that I am, I am very wary of banner ads, for example the double click ones, with as much visibility as they have around the net, with a little creative logging, they could essentially track all of your browsing habits (and pretty much do using data mining, though I don't know if it is tied to a specific person or not) whether or not you click on their ads (it grabs the pic from their server, which creates log entries). I consider it a privacy issue on top of an annoyance issue, although it is certainly less revulsive than pop-ups and pop-unders.
So, the original question still stands, is 'Banner Free Surfing' as a site benefit, going away? And if you want to look at the banners, that is your business, not mine, I personally will be using a combination of outpost and hosts files to block them (like I said, I am paranoid, and no, I do not surf the web for illicit or immoral things (antionline, americasarmy, cnn, and incidents.org are pretty much it), I just happen to think it is nobody else's business).

Yes. The "Banner Free Surfing" feature for Addicts is gone.

1100100101110011100101001100111> I don't work for anyone right now... Gotta love life unemployed.. oh wait, no.. it sucks.
I agree about the banner adds not being a bad thing though. Yes they can tend to be somewhat annoying, especially if you are connecting using a 56k modem, because it often makes the site load slower. But they are a LOT better then popups and popunders. I think we should start a list of sites that have popups and popunders, and start blackballing those sites (ie, no one go there and everyone send email to webmaster telling them to remove the popus). In the long run, and with the help of ohh.... 80% of interntet.com and the rest of jupitermedia, it could end up improving things.

LOL...
nebulus... I can't disagree with you on the security / privacy aspect of banner ads... in fact I would be right up there with you on that score - I admit that I was digressing from your main point although I was in part just clarifying the commercial aspects of the discussion written by other people rather than trying to denigrate your original point. Sorry if you took offense. I agree with you about the double click example which is why I make rather judicious use of ad blocking techniques, restricting cookies etc . But as others have said... I know what I want to buy and consequently rarely take any notice of ads in the first place (assuming I even get to see them :D )
Souleman.... I like the black balling idea!
