I've said this on a couple other threads, but again, I'm gonna reccomend you spend $25 and get the book "C++ in Plain English" by Brian Overland. This book has both a simple, easy to follow step-by-step tutorial as well as a thorough reference section. This book will both get you started and keep you going.
And I got the Borland compiler for free too, but that was quite a while ago.
don't use borland. borland sucks.
For a beginner I would recomend Borland because of its easy to use interface. It may lack a few of the features that Microsoft offers but for just learning it wont make much of a difference. Also try to get a book or two about C++ because help files dont always have the answers. You might also get a friend to lend you his copy of Borland or visual so you can try it out and decide for yourself which you like better. Every programer has different tastes(like me i always change the syntax highlighting). C++ is easier to understand once you get past the main issues(such as Object Oriented Programing), and shouldnt be a big deal other than finding the specific function for the job that you want to do. Have fun!
Well, the final tests AP computer science tests have been switched to JAVA, so C++ is considered an old language :( JAVA is slower that C++ and i perfer C++ because you can do much more with it. Anyways, as far as compliers are considered, you sound like a newbie, so i would just get a learning edition of something for like 50 bucks at Frys or something. Dont buy a full compiler for like 700 bucks or how ever much they cost. And if you were really smart, you would just download a full complier from one of the sites mentioned above...

what tool will help me learn C++ better...? Borland C++ Personal or MS Visual C++
? Or should I learn visual basic? Let me know on pros and cons please, price is about the same for both products, tho Borland is slightly cheaper.
I started with C++ using old Borland compiler & later bought Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 Enterprise edition which contains Microsoft Visual C++ & Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0. From my experience, I advise you to start with Visual Basic instead of C++ because Visual Basic is very very very very very very ... easy compared to C++. C++ is the most powerful language around & difficult to learn. I regret that I didn't start with Visual Basic as I am now in love with Visual Basic. Everyone says that VB is easy. So, you should try it.
Regarding tool, I think learning Visual C++ itself is a challenge. So, it is better to learn Visual Basic.
