Do you have file/print share enabled on either of those machines? If no, then thats why you can't connect. You can only connect to it if it is sharing...Quote:
I have Windows XP professional installed on both the pcs and they are connected by crossover cable. I have cable connection of 1.5mbps. Well I have given the ip address to both the pcs manually.
The both computers share peer-to-peer relation. yes it is cat5 cable which is also called as switch cable. Well I have no idea about domain names/ workgroup names but yes both the pcs have different pc names.

Well yes the file and print sharing is open on both the pcs and the ip which i have given to that pc, when i search for it from start->search->computer then it do show me the stuff in the shared folder and i can share it. But the proble is that when i ping the ip which i have given to it then i recieve no reply at all.
have you turned the ICF (XP's built in firewall) off for the network connection??

The speed on your crossover looks wrong. If file and print sharing is turned on...and they both have a real IP address not that 168 one MS uses then I would check the cable. The speed isn’t right it shouldn't be that slow unless you are using and old BNC/Token ring Nic which I doubt. There is probably a physical problem with the cable.
Well guess what. I do not know how this happened but the pc has started to reply to the ping. I have no clue at all that how it happened and it was not responding in the morning.
Anyways back to that lmhost file......now that both the pcs are connected and pings are being replied.......... :)
BTW I have used that 168 ip addresses.

Well, phishphreek80 described to you the right syntax, but like it's already been stated, you really don't need to add these entries to the lmhosts file. At least I have never had to mess with..
shouldnt need tomoify lmhosts if there are shares you should be able to use net commands to get to them.Quote:

Yes, i know that but what if i want to access the whole drive, not only the shared resources?
All drives are shared by default on NT/2K/XP. So, just type "net use z: 10.10.10.10\C$" to access your C drive. You'll probably be asked the admin password to the other machine, so you'll have to type that in. Also, replace 10.10.10.10 with the IP of the other machine.
