Driver issue... see my post above. If its showing up with a ! next to it in the device manager, that simply means that Win2k doesn't have a suitable driver. not EVERTHING is plug and play.

Visit the manufacutere and save the driver to the hard drive. Then go into device manager, CDROM properties, advanced, update driver, and choose have disk. browse to location of driver.

I have had the same problem. Win2k doesn't always find every single device.
There is that stray device that it doesn't know. Hell, took me like a week to find appropriate drivers for a sound card...

After the <sarcasm>awesome</sarcasm> help I got from s0ny did nothing, I waited till the warranty expired, then opened it up. Sure enough, the gears were all fuxored up and out of alignment in there. If I were you/them, I'd call the company to get it replaced before the warranty runs out, so that you can save them the pain of owning a VERY expensive paperweight.

I know it may be a pain, but if you have tried several different
drives, the BIOS finds it, and you can boot from it, it doesn't
sound like a hardware problem.

You may have to reinstall your OS, or better yet, a different
one, to see if it will fix it. Your installation may be corrupted
somehow, in which case a reinstall will fix it. Or it may be a win2k
issue, and microsoft may have a bug fix.
