Just use Outpost and be done with it. ZA is a problem waiting to happen. Sorry to all of you ZA users but it's the truth.

KorpDeath,
Just curious as to why you say ZA is a problem waiting to happen? I am not familiar with Outpost but I will look into it.

This particular product has had a very bad history of not being "philosophically" sound. For instance there was an issue with it not protecting your computer when you'd lock the workstation, or when a screen saver went on, etc. etc.
I understand it's got pretty buttons and everything is cute but if the product doesn't do what it was created to do then what good is it.
If you search these forums you'll also find out that ZoneLabs as a business isn't exactly the quickest to fix something that is wrong or even admit they have aproblem. IMHO that's not the way to run a "security" based company.
Anyway, it is my opinion, but I've tested most of the major firewalls head-to-head and there weren't many that I couldn't crash (or worse) even when they are configured properly.
It's ultimately your decision but that's just not my first choice, or even my 10th choice for that matter.
Good luck.
Thanks for the info KorpDeath, I checked out OutPost and I am very interested in it. I have heard about it before but I have not looked into. Now I think I will. Thanks again.

Well....
I am no expert in security, i am a "newbie".....that a few months ago was a victim of of a DoS, while having a Sysgate Firewall
Then my computer froze (not related to the attack, it probably was a virus) and since; because of some other reasons, i could not format my comp...i had reinstalled XP without formatting.....i know i know....but i don't have any backup "gizmo"...
That was when i decided to really protect my computer...I had a new anti virus...Panda Anti Virus Platinum (the one with a firewall). I decided for this one (i used others before) because my dad's company was using this and they already had bought it plus the account for the upgrading....
I reaallllly was happy.....Anti Virus and Firewall....then the problems started...by testing the Panda firewall, using Gibson's Shields Up..i found it left "in"famous ports like 80, wiide open!!.....still i decided to learn how custom the firewall....and i did it...stealth......but i had to make .....6 or 7 rules......
(later by reading the "help" file i found out that Panda antivirus firewall uses... Sysgate technology...IT'S A SYSGATE....the one that failed to proctect my comp before)
Today i changed to Zone Alarm Pro 4....and right now....i am being attacked......my poor computer...being scanned, whammed....whacked all day....and i only notice since i installed ZA...the ol firewall wasn't getting an attack for months.....i wonder...
Till now i am happy with it...i already tested it....Symantec and GRC ( symatec only failed in 1 test.....because it did not have an anti virus.........heh go fig........)
My computer is fully stealth on all service ports (according with Shield's Up), and it doesn't need any rules....
So for me....a lot better than Sysgate
PS.: sorry for the long post and any grammar, spelling mistakes...."english ain't my language"

I second the suggestion to move to Outpost. I have Outpost Pro since my computer doesn't like the free version. I got it a month or so ago after some bad experiences with ZA and I've never regretted the switch. I've also got Sygate Pro, Kaspersky Antihacker, and Visnetic on this machine and switch between them occasionally just for fun (I'm a firewall buff). I find myself using Outpost more than any of the others. I highly recommend it.
Ultimately, a firewall is a personal decision. What works for me might not be to your liking. I'd say check out a few before you make a final decision. Most offer 15 or 30 day free trials. That said, I think you'd like Outpost.
paid attention to the dates. I spotted the thread on the home page and read through without ever looking. I think it's a valid thread but 8 months is a long time between responses. I can make the excuse that I've been away from Antionline for quite a while and just started posting again, but mostly it's the content rather than the dates that I look at.
I agree, the content is important. It was not to long ago I got negged for posting on a flashing thread. You know, it's Christmas time, let's all just liten up a little.
Peace and good will
Freddy
It might be an old thread, but it is one I missed on its first time through.....and I learned something from it, so personally, I am glad it got bumped up.
Thank you KorpDeath for the comparison of firewalls. I was going to check outn Outpost in the future, but since I just read your post, I will check it out now.
*edit* Besides new content was added.....I would only complain about an old thread being answered if it was a one liner....like: "I aggree" *edit*
