Hmmm - Now I don't know what the heck I'm going to put on this new system. I used Zone Alarm when it first came out and swore by it until I opened the wrong text file. My system was trashed - Norton was worthless and Zone Alarm maintained a connection for an invisible program with full server options no matter how many times I reformatted. I'd load Outpost but the person buying the computer wants 'low maintenance'. I'm assuming the ISP connections are the "always on" type from the posts, rather than dialup, which is what he will have - so maybe there won't be a problem. I guess it's back to the ZA forums for some heavy reading. Thanks for the heads up!

I tried zone alarm and thought it was crap to be frank.
I use Noton Antivirus and Norton firewall, together thay make an excellent combination and i have had no troubles.
I also run adaware, spy sweeper and spy bot every week to rid myself of those nasty spy ware programs - yuck !!!
Gave up on Zonealarm after the V3 Pro started to give problems connecting to random sites from other machines on the network, finally had to remove it completly to restore normal ICS operation.. Currently using VesNetic, stable and trouble free for about 2 months (mind - ZA failed after 3 mths other versions either had problems with ICS or wouldn't work with it, crashed the system, or simply screwed the TCPIP settings)..
Currently trying to setup an old system with smoothwall (V2 failed but V1 seems to install.. now to get in and configure)
Cheers
I read an article today which mentioned that Zone Alarm Free now incorporates "popup banner ads". Does anyone know when they started this? Hmmm, maybe I should try Tiny or Sygate . . .

Why did you not post a link or reference to the article?
the latest free version I know if is version 3.7.143 released on or about April 1, 2003.
No pop-ups, no banners that anyone has complained of.
You mentioned Tiny. Do they offer a free version?? I sent them correspondence concerning egresses from their free firewall a while back, it was shortly thereafter removed from their site with no comment from the company.
Do you mean "incorporates" as in uses pop-up banner ads? Or, are you referring to it blocking pop-up and banner ads?Quote:

I can tell you that ZoneAlarm Pro 3.7 does block pop-up and banner ads. That functionality is ONLY inlcuded in the Pro version though.
Pro ads some different privacy features like blocking cookies and stripping identifying information out of your packet headers. It also lets you block pop-up / pop-under ads and such and it allows you to block advertisements or only those that affect performance. You can assign a timeframe- say 5 seconds- and tell it not to allow any ad that takes longer than 5 seconds to load.
If you happen to want access to the ads still, you can set it to block ads, but leave a clickable box in its place so you can click on it if you choose to view the ad.
You can check out my Product Review of it on my About.com site or check this comparison chart of the 3 versions of ZoneAlarm: Product Comparison
As far as the Free version using pop-up or banner ads I have neither heard nor seen anything to support that. I too would be interested in getting a link to the article you are referring to.
Recently I found a MPEG file that I did not remember downloading from Kazaa. I tried to delete it but whenever I put my mouse on the file the Debugging message with hexadecimal numbers appear. This file could not be deleted until I selected all files in the Kazaa folder & delete all of them.
Later, my Zone Alarm keep on bugging me with this messages whenever I am online.
"The firewall has blocked access to your computer[TCP Port 1111} from 193.169.2.111 (TCP Port 3426) (TCP Flags: S). "
The port number always changed. Whenever I clicked for More Info, Zone Alarm will tell me that my PC is safe. Is someone trying to hack me or have I been hacked?
Thank you for answering my question.
Well firstly, don't panic, it looks like ZoneAlarm is doing is job. I get hundreds of hits in an average online session. The IP you posted belongs to the AT&T group out of the UK:
To be on the safe side, I would check your computer for Trojans. The Cleaner works pretty good for this.Quote:

No, the IP actually came from my router. I made up the 193.XXX.XXX.XXX . Thanks . Do u have any idea what is going on? I just switched to Zone Alarm from Mc Afee less than a month & my Zone Alarm already blocked more than 864 intrusions. I am scared. I don't want to reformat my PC again.
