There are pieces of mal-ware (i.e. Trojans) which hijack your phone line to ring premium rate numbers, thus using up your phone bill and giving money to bad people.
You want to keep those out, don't you?

these have all been great replies with much merit. Without knowing you I don't know if you can understand them. I can think of only one other off hand which may not be that important in the scheme of things, but:
Did you pay for your operating system? What operating system are you using??
Lets' imagine you for a minute you paid for your operating system ( wether it came with the computer or you purchased it separately )
You purchased it recently, which means you probably have Windows XP.
I, for what ever reason, don't want to pay for XP. I crack your computer, download a few files, change them on your computer, then, all of a sudden ...
I now have a registered version and you get locked out by MS!!
Is this possible ?? Or am I just paranoid ?
