It is possible that his modem is busted ...but why did the technician of his ISP didn't do anything about it ...Quote:

Sounds to me this ISP is not very trustworthy.
And the Technician could connect ...if he used the same modem then the modem is not malfunctioning I think.
My guess is it's a problem at the ISP.

Cemetric.....I agree 100% - 'ISP technician' should have been able to see that.
BUT.........the 'ISP technicians' here have minimal knowledge. Their training is limited to:
Plug cable modem in (are lights working ? yes/no)
Test with pre-configured laptop. (working ? yes/no)
Go to next call

No-one has even asked if you have a Static IP. I am led to belive you are set up for a static IP, but your internet service providor has you set up with a Dynamic IP. Remember when they had you run a ipconfig. That was your key to ask, why should my IP change, should it change? It sounds like you think your IP is supposed to stay the same. Thats only if you have a Static IP, other wise you will draw your IP out of the IP Pool everytime you connect. Seriously, If you havent fixed this by now, you may want to look into this...
Have you specified an IP in the TCP/IP settings of your Network Connection?
If you have, and your IP is not Static, and that IP is not available, you will get server not found ect...this explains the sparratic connection. Where as I'm not tottally sure, this could be the problem. I work at an ISP myself. I deal with IP Conflicts alot, if you wanna PM, me I'm sure I could help...
And another thing.... it sounds like you may need a new IT guy.

Every one has given you some good ideas. But try a more systematic approach.
Hardware first: Are youre cat5 cables in good shape? No loose connectors or pinched cords.
if you run a router take it out and connect straight to the modem to see if it is the issue.
If you have a freind or neighbor on the same isp see if you can trade modems to test with.
awlays try the simple things first. double check that the cable are properly plugged in and that
the diagnostic lights are not indicating problems, both your modem and nic cards have them.
if all hardware checks out then you have narrowed it down to software.

Welcome to A-O! Alot of good knowledgable folks here that can help with alot of different problems and issues.
Some of the posts are old and have a blinking date as part of the message information at the top line. If this is the case, then that post is over 30 days old and has proably been taken care of.
Its a minor mistake to make.
