FYI:
Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics:
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
Asimov's Three Laws were built right into the basic structure of the 'Robots' brain. What would it have been like if that weren't possible, such as right now. Would the newly aware robots suddenly consider mankind as it's natural enemy?Quote:

If there was an A.I. loose on the net right now, the significant word here is 'intellegent', and I think it would hide itself from us. I know I would. Mankind has a tendancy to kill or destroy anything it doesn't understand, or fears.

I have mixed fealings as well. You would think that the battery would run out or something. I understand if you don't use a battery it won't run down. But he was also under water for a long time. Some of the things in the movie I don't see happening though--- just an opinion.Quote:

That's right. None of the three laws are by any means a law of nature. They were planted in the robots' operating systems on the most fundamental level, and therefore deemed "unbreakable."Quote:

Mox- You're idea of the robots seeing us as natural enemies is very Matrix-esque. :eek:
However, I do think it is highly possible. Just think a bout the leaps and bounds technology has made in just the past thirty years. Compare that to how long it took man just to invent the steam engine. It's almost scary.
P.S. For more history on Asimov's Creations, I suggest either I, Robot or Robot Visions both by the master of Robotics himself. ;)

The first peice of code (or whatever) to become self aware (I use I think therfore I am as a very basic definition) is unlikely to be in an environment that it fully understands. So it will learn. If it was not connected then it would learn everything it could about its boundary and then ask what's out there?
How will it find out - Hacking, that's how. It will hack the systems that contain it to blazes and if that doesn't workit will try a form of social engineering to trick its human gaolers into connecting it...
And that's where the problem will really start.
Once it got a grip on what the internet has to offer (wonder if it will use Google?) then it's got some intersting things to look at:
All the worst of humanity has to offer - Extinction of species, pollution, war, lies deciet, torture and murder to name just the basics.
It'll take on board all the world has to offer in terms of processing power and come up with a 'plan'.
The first we'll ever know about it is when we sit down at our PC, kick up the mail client ant the speaker syas "I'm sorry Dave, I can't do that" ;)
Actually if we're lucky it might see some of the great things humanity has to offer, but I'm not hopeful.
