Make sure nortons is not blocking the privet range. 98's Tcp/IP stack is prety buggy as well, in some instances I have had to turn netbui or ipx/spx on 98 and the server t oget a 98 system onto the network.

I would say this looks like a network (Layer 3/4) Issue. If you can't ping you XP box, then either you packets are filtered or they get lost on the network. Try to connect from Win98 to teh XP boxon port 135 (one of the Netbios port) with telnet. LIke: telnet IP 135
If this connects then at least you have layer 3/4 connectifity to the box. Then start looking at Netbios or Windows settings.
Install NetBoui on both computers and use the same workgroup and different computer names...
Example... My workgroup is franksradio.net .. default is "workgroup"
You will not have to worry about static IP addresses this way
Linksys works real well with DHCP
Then re-boot, and both machings will show up in My Network Places....
Be sure to turn on file sharing....
I could write a complete book on Networking..... So many ways....
As a note on XP Pro
NetBoui is burried here \VALUEADD\MSFT\NET\NETBEUI\
XP Home, it is not on the CD but NetBoui from Pro will work
Hope this helps you get started....
Have Fun!!!
But Netbui is not a routable protocol, and right now my computers are set up to use the Router as the internet gateway. So If I'm correct, If I use NetBui I will not be able to get online.
As long as you have the TCP/IP protocal installed and turned on
you will still have net connection....
And Yes NetBoui is non routable outside your file wall
but if you share using NetBoui, less chance of hacks....
Still no luck so far.
I uninstalled all network protocols on my Win 98 box and reinstalled them. First I reinstalled TCP/IP, File and Print Sharing, and Client for Microsoft Windows.
I then rebooted but still no look on being able to acces my shares. I then added NetBeui protocols, but same problem, I still can't access my shares. Don't worry about it anymore though. By next Wednesday I'll have a brand new computer built that will replace the WIN 98 box.
Why would you want or need two firewalls? Last time I had two firewalls, I had nothing but trouble. I turned one of them off and everything started working right. The firewalls seem to have been working agaisnt each other. That's my two cents. Good luck.

I did disable my Norton Firewall, but still to no avail.
