thanks for the heads up. Seems to be I'm always patching windows.
manicchester, they dominate the market cos of marketing, and ease of use for regular users and also some other things that are going on that i will not go into as that will jst go on and on like.....I guess most of you know wat I'm talking abt
Ok lets stop making fun of them now. Heh, Iv been refering to Windows 95 and ME as swiss cheese for about a year now. Now, for how they dominate. There are people that dont have time to learn something new and well, Windows is what you learn in high school. Also, Besides my Linux box i also have a computer that came with Windows XP, now at first i wasnt giving it any benefit of the doubt, but when i got my new computer home and hooked up I was honestly shocked.
It was really good. I havnt had any problems with XP at all. It runs Doom which was for DOS and hell it doesnt even have that and being able to run Doom scored points in the book of gore.
Also, I have a **** load of CDs that i put on my HD so I dont have to go around hunting for them when i wanna hear a CD, and Windows XP shows the folders with the CDs album cover and also Iv left that machine on for days without even a slow down.
Now dont get me wrong, I love Linux and BSD, but also, I love Windows XP. Iv used around 20 OSs now and I learned them well. Windows is easy to use. When i had my OSs class a few months ago there were people in there that just could NOT grasp what a command line was or see any benefits to it.
These people should prolly stick with what they know. Also, Untill Linux and BSD get more support, gamers have no real choice. Im no gamer, I like Unreal Tournament and doom and quake. Linux comes with great games but going into a store and buying a new game, chances are it isnt going to work on my Linux box at all.
Another thing, I think we should hold computer companies responcible. Whens the last time you went into a store to buy a PC and they asked would you like a Windows or *NIX version of the machine?
Prolly never. I think Free BSD, Open BSD, Linux, and BeOS would be doing alot better if HP and Compaq would start shipping computers made for *NIX to stores for sale. I know I would love to see a Free BSD or Open BSD machine sitting on the shelf at a store.
Out of all the OSs Iv used:
Windows 95, from my first computer I got from my unckle. It was great for what I did at the time, read about hacking and learn how a computer works in a basic way.
98SE, came on a computer I bought, I had almost no problems with it, I had it set up secure and stable, some people think thats not possible but I did it and its great for gaming and using things and is compatible with almost everything.
2000 Pro, I bought this about 5 months ago. Again this is a good OS, its fairly stable and Iv never had a crash yet. One thing I dont like about Windows is you have to reboot for almost everything you install. I patched it as soon as I installed and had to reboot for each patch and also some couldnt be downloaded together. Other than this its really good.
XP Home, Like I said this came on my new computer and I still havnt had problems. Its stable and I have yet to have a crash or "weird reboot". For a while it was beating ym Linux box in uptime.
XP Pro, I use this at school. At my college they have a few machines with Windows 98 SE, Most of the others have XP Pro, A few Macs, and a Few Linux boxes. For the most part its just like XP Home.
Windows 3.11, after I screwed my old ass first computer I got from my unckle I installed this on it After PC-DOS was on. Was the only thing that would load besides PC-DOS. Not to good but faster than Windows 95.
Windows NT, NT I got from my best friend, he loves NT and knows how to secure it. It was ok.
BeOS pro, I bought this a while back and it is kinda cool. But needs more software to come with it.
CP/M, I had a shell acount for this and I actually thought it was cool (it was a few months ago I used it for the first time)
PC-DOS, This was all that would work on my killed computer and to be honest, it was pretty cool. I liked it. Maybe I can find someone who has no use for a 486 and I can install it again since I still have the orginal IBM floppies it came on.
MS-DOS, Nice CP/M rip off in my opinion. It works and does what it was made to do. Make people WANT to learn Linux.
Redhat Linux 6.1, 7.2, 8, and 9, I always had a bad time with Red Hat and from this I mean when installing it would fail while writing the partition table and leave my machine unbootable, so besides giving me something to do for 2 hours I would never recommend Redhat 6. 7 is supposedly ok, Im not to sure though because I gave it to my best friend for UNIX. 8.0 and 9.0 on the other hand Im happy to say I got the ****ers working!!!! There not as good as SuSE but there pretty nice.
Mandrake Linux 7.1 and 9.1, 7.1 I bought like within 3 months of having my first computer (He I told you I learned fast) 9.1 is awesome. Very stable and easy as hell to install. **** if installing 9.1 got any easier Tux would be giving you a ****ing hand job while you were installing it....Or flipper job. I think its good.
SuSE Linux 8.1 Professional, Heh...What can I say? SUSE ****ING OWNS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Easy to install and set up, easy to use, stable, secure, nice firewall, awesome choices.
SuSE Linux 8.2 Professional, Heh, yet again, SUSE OWNS!!@#!$@#% I love it!!!!!!!!!!!
Turbo Linux workstation, I bought this a while back, to be honest again it is nice, but not for someone whos new. Learn Linux better before you go for this (I have an old version I bought and it may have gotten better but it was a bitch to install at first, even slackware was easier. I didnt use a manual for either.)
Slackware Linux 3, 8, and 9, Slackware I first got from my best friend as a gift. It was from a Linux website he got it from so there wasnt a book, just the paid for CD, but I did get the lil **** installed. Slackware is way easier than what people tell you. Dont believe anyone saying its the hardest thinng to install. People will tell you that installing slackware and Free BSD are like writing binary. there fulla ****. Its not that damned hard. It may not be for a newbie but then again arent we all newbies when it comes down to it? Sorry had to confuse you, now that dummy mode is on, slack is not that hard. Its common sence. :)
Debian 3.0R1, I got this a while back and it is cool. The install is...Weird, but its cool.
Open Linux, I have a VERY old version of this I got from my best friend... Heh, I gave him Redhat 7.2, and copied a CD for him and he gave me Windows NT "to try out", UNIX, Slackware and this. Its cool even though SCO is a ****ing **** head.
Caldera Linux, This was my first version. I installed it at school. My teacher realised I was NOT going to do ****ing Microsoft Office (this was ALMOST 3 years ago, but as I said, I learned quick) Anyway, I deleted the 50 Napsters that were on the PC, uninstalled Office and AOL and then I partitioned the HD and indtalled this right the first time. Easy.
K-12 Linux, My friend in the UK is a sys admin and they run this, he gave me an account on the box and I got to use it. Its redhat based and is kinda nice.
Free BSD, not long after I bought that first Linux CD, I bought this. Like a moron I tried figuring it out myself. Heh, guess who was learning from hand how to redo a HD and MBR for 2 days with no books!!!! Anyway, I tried again and got it working and I have 4.0 power pack (the software yahoo.com runs on) 4.7, and I bought 5.0 not to long ago. Its honestly easier to install than slackware but anyway, its good.
But gore! All these OSs! Why list them? Easy, so people reading this can see why Microsoft can "get away with releasing things that crash" When people know how to use an OS like Winbdows, they are prolly NOT going to learn how to install Linux just so things wont crash like that.
I go to bolt.com sometimes and people on the Mac boards there honestly think Windows is the only PC OS. Its sad and of course i flame them like Woodstock '99 but still they think that Windows is PC and MacOS is Mac... Dumb Asses. Anyway, basically, this is why Bill gates wins. He has an easy to use OS, people think that Windows runs on all computers and therefore think that computers crash like that all the time. They dont realise its not the computer, but the OS. So untill people open there minds to something else, Bill Gates will continue to win.
Gore, one hell of a long post. But great read. Ur last part nailed it on why Windows is everywhere
I agree totally. Long but very info full...I think I just made up a word! Haha:)Quote:

Actually, when I bought my new laptop. I bought it at PC Club, and most of what they sell comes with linux, and just a few with windows. Sure, it is like buying a generic putor, but the savings in $$ and being treated like an actual person, is worth it to me.Quote:

My machine is a widows XP, but that is because I wanted a DVD/Re-write combo drive, and linux (I was told) didn't have a good DVD prog. out yet. Still, I am going to run dual OS's when I can put it altogether and have the best of both worlds.
Sorry Gore but I have too I thought this was just too funny

The next thing you will see is 'Swiss Cheese" as a term for "Windows"
