Like everyone here says, release a crippled version as trial and then give them the full version when they pay. But then they might pay and then share the software thru p2p.
Copy protection wont work cos the minute u come up with new copy protection someone comes up ith a crack. also u waste too much time on writing copy prcotection code when u could be improving ur software.
My sggestion is to forget about it and concentrate on your program. And get the fulfillment from writing a great software rather than wriiting ok software and wasting ur time figuring how to copy protect your software and getting frustrated in the process cos half the time it wont work well enough.

Play them at their own game.
Give your own crack to that website and have it so that when that serial or crack is used it writes a registry key to the machine to lock the software out completely after 5 uses and won't work even if re-installed.

Nightfalls_Girl has hit the nail on the head.....
You know of an app called Traktor Dj Studio , They tried to do what Nightfalls_Girl said but then a 'patcher' (Check_Sum_Bad) dicovered a new way of cracking it.....
"Its a Cat & Mouse game " Crippled ware is one DEFINITE solution,

You could be very noble and release your software open source.

Nothing will slow crackers down ;)
Try to use hardware protection (dongle).
But this will stop just some :-) ....
Actually if crackers do crack your software maybe it's not that bad (even in VB) ;)
U know what I mean.

I get your point l0stcluster..
Having your software cracked is (in a way) flatering..
I won't ever have my software cracked.. I only do "inter departemental" and some "open source"
Oh.. and I did some stuff requireing a subscription to some services our firm provides, without fresh data you can't use the software (or atleast do anything usefull with it)

If you wrote it in VB, it will be cracked, and easily. I suggest you forget about it, anyone who enjoys your product and finds it valuble will pay for it, those who are not willing to pay will never do so, dont waste your time on them. Have fun coding.
